You can't practice while on PUP so that means the soonest he can realistically come back would be week 8 (after 2 weeks of practice).

So say he comes back by game 4 then is the roster spot worth 4 extra games? I think so.

A lot of us never doubted those guys would play. This has been the "If you don't feel like practicing, by all means don't" training camp.

The question is if they and the team will be any good after taking so much time off.
It was the same injury. Some would say he shouldn't have returned for that game.

According to this article from a year ago, he was supposed to be 100% by February. I don't believe he was even off crutches then.

Why is anyone acting like Spencer is so crucial that we should consider wasting a roster spot on him for 4 or more games? He was a good LB in the 3-4. So maybe if he was still 28 and playing in that defense, it'd be a more valid question. But now he's a DE who's played a grand total of one game at the position. Even assuming he can get back to some semblance of health, we have no idea if he's anything more than average for the position. The odds of him coming back healthy and contributing in a consistent, meaningful manner as a DE are pretty long.

Whether anyone wants to use the word or not, we're in rebuilding mode. Any spot not dedicated to an established player should be used for players to be evaluated for the future.

Always complaining about injuries in football, is like not liking the food in the Army. Things just don't change except for Thanksgiving and Christmas lay outs...

If he is thinking "by week six" then we are wasting a roster spot. We are already going carry one for Lawrence.

Not sure about you, but unless the player feels pretty good about his chances, which he does not, I use the roster devices in place get as many healthy players on this defensive roster that I can. This is not good enough of a defense to do otherwise.

Based on other comments made by Spencer and the team I think he will be on the field well before 6 weeks. I think if Cowboys had any intentions of holding him back until week 6 they would have placed him on PUP.

Yes if you plan on tanking the season Dallas does not. Yes they are rebuilding but it is not all 1st and 2nd year players. Teams will have vets as they rebuild and as far as DE if you have not noticed Dallas could use all the help they can get and Spencer when healthy is a quality ball player.

Spencer contract breaks down as such
  • Split Salary: $423,000
  • Per Game Bonus: $46,875
  • Sack Incentives:
    7: $250,000
    9: $500,000
    11: $750,000
  • 65% of Snaps: $250,000
  • 85% of Snaps: $750,000
Heck if he can come up with 11 sacks and 85% of the snaps then give the man his money. Outside of that this is not a big contract by any standard and it is largely based on production

Rebuilding doesn't necessarily mean tanking.

and if does not mean you throw rookies out there with out any vet support in the mix. Dallas will have a lot of young players getting ample snaps this year by and large this is a very young unit.

Exactly. It is the same type of article that was posted in the OP. They said February and he wasn't even walking under his own power. The OP's link says he'll be ready by week 2, but he hasn't played more than a game of football in nearly two years.

Spencer is a low risk gamble at this point. Who cares what he's made in the past or what he will make in the future, outside of this year. I'd guess they looked at who they had and who they figured would be available and decided that the chance of a game or two of Spencer is of more value then having that roster spot for the #5 DE on the depth chart. I'm not sure that might not be a correct way of looking at it. The primary argument against it isn't about Spencer its about losing someone like Ryan Williams or not keeping Vaughn on the roster if you think you might legitimately lose him.

They interviewed Spencer on the Fan today. He said he hopes to get back before week 6.

He said back in June he hoped to get back by the end of training camp. I'm about as tired of his projected returns as hearing about how Claiborne is always day to day.
