I think any chance of Newman coming back (and I don't think he is) will be up to him and his acceptance of redoing his contract for 2012.

I know the number is big so I defer to you. I think we're going to have to wait and see what the club does. It's just impossible for an outsider to know what's going on with him and just what ability is there. The history of injury/poor play is public record though. I'm thinking you're right on the money though.

Hey, I get the frustration with this defense. I truly do.

But it's like this, I watched the GB/DET game, and I'll tell ya, I saw two pass defenses that were worse than anything I saw Dallas do (or not do) this year... And these two pass defenses are going to the playoffs– go figure!

The ability to get pressure on the quarterback can work wonders with masking deficiencies in the secondary. Our defensive line needs to be able to rotate guys with high motors in and maintain constant pressure. We need another DE that can pin those ears back and get after it like Ware. Desperately..

I'm guessing he was playing injured....again. You don't just drop off like that without good reason.

This is the same ole story though and frankly we don't have the luxury of continuing this story.

I'm of the opinion we bring him back next year and let him compete. If he can play then fine and if not then play a younger guy. If there is someone on the roster who you think will become a starter and Newman will cost him his roster spot then you jettison Newman this coming year. At most I'd keep him for 2012 only if that.

I don't know the cap repercussions of keeping the guy or cutting him but obviously that's a big factor in considering what to do with the guy as well.

I wonder if he's even interested in coming back. He sure didn't look like it.

That game sure looked like his swan song. He played like hot pungent garbage.

Yeah he looked rather miserable over there when they pulled him from the game. Problem with that move though was we did worse when they replaced him if that's possible.

And another's point about the lack of pass rush is right on. We have to find some pressure next year without resorting to the blitz so often. That will help the secondary a great deal.

We also need our GM to cease trading first round picks for anything other than more picks on draft day.

So now we're moving the goalposts to encompass being a game day active?

LOL.

in no way am i using that as a reference to success.

but i do think you can use it as a reference to a bust.

use some common sense for a second. all of these injuries this year at the guard position, we chose two aging vets, killer and nagy over arkin. are you freaking kidding?

now i keep hearing 'oh dboy he came from a small school, all he needs is an offseason in the weight room and he might be able to start next season' :lmao:

cmon guys, arkin hasn't been sitting on his *** all season, HE HAS BEEN IN THE WEIGHT ROOM....also, killer came from a small school as well, nagy was a tight end convert but even they were able to contribute this season but our 4th round draft pick wasn't?

and i don't believe for one second this is how the cowboys planned it. they drafted arkin with the intention to play, something went wrong in the evaluation IMO. *don't kill me this is MY OPINION*...no way did they knowingly spend 3 of their 4 first picks on players that would be non-contributors for large portions of their first seasons.

We competed this year even with all our problems. We simply gave 3 games away and still had a chance to win the division. The Packers create turnovers, but the Saints don't get alot of turnovers. Both teams simply outscore teams. We can do the same if we upgrade the offensive line. I'm not saying we don't need to upgrade the defense because we do, but the offensive line should be the priority. We upgrade it and we'll contend.

We competed because of a remarkably easy schedule. This was a 5-6 win team against a schedule like the one we'll have next year.

We need to improve A LOT. Our combined O-Line + D-Line might be the worst in football.

We didn't have a remarkably easy schedule and if you are going to use that nonsense you might as well say that about every NFL team. The only teams worth anything that we didn't play this year are the Steelers, Ravens, Saints, and Packers. No team plays a really good team the majority of the time. I get tired of people trying to take away our win total because we didn't play who you thought was a good team. We got those wins because we were good enough to beat the teams we did beat. So replace the Jets and Pats with the Ravens and Steelers and the Lions and Bucs with the Packers and Saints. We still have 7 wins.

Dont forget the worst secondary in football.

There's just so much to do to be able to contend next year, IMO. Especially on the Defense side of things. I think and am hopeful maybe in 4-5 years, we can finally be a good football team.

Maybe if we had a run and gun power offense like the Packers or Saints, but we are not consistent enough to hang with them.

We can be if we improve the offensive line.

Stop it just stop it. We can if we upgrade the offensive line. Look around the NFL some of the best teams in the league like the Packers, Saints, and Patriots all are ranked 20th or worse in total defense. Also even with all the issues we had this past season we could've very easily been 11-5 had we not given 3 key games away. @ the Jets, and Vs Detroit and NYG. This is a different day and age we don't need a great or even good defense to win, but we do need a better offensive line. If we can get one this team can contend next season.
I wouldn't expect to be big time players in free agency.I keep hearing that they're going to be up against the cap next year.I believe they have alot of dead money from Roy Williams,Marion Barber,Andre Gurode, and Leonard Davis. If there is someone out there that knows more about there cap situation.please chime in.Plus they don't have a great record for drafting.

It's a cop out to say that we can't compete next season.

There are plenty of teams that go from being awful to competing the next season.

It's up to Garrett to make the personnel changes that will get us there.
You mean Jerry to make the personnel changes.

BlueStar22;4356807 said:
Please. The Giants and Cowboys are lucky it took Philly the entire season to gel. They will be the favorites going into next year to win the division. Eli owns the Cowboys and the Giants have won 5 of the last 6. I cannot see any way we compete next year. There is not some magic button that Jerry can push to fill all the holes needed this offseason. I just don't see it. This team will be 5-11 again before we contend again. I really believe that.

I am afraid that you may actually be right.

The Giants own us, when Brandon Jacobs was air-humping the star and most of our guys looked like they were literally scared of him...........well, not a good sign.

The Eagles are just too fast and athletic for us to compete with, we are totally built wrong to play against a team like that.

The Skins would have actually beat us at least once if they had a kicker, that is what is really sad.

So yea, there is a good chance we only win maybe 1 or 2 games in the division next year and it is almost impossible to make the playoffs doing that.

I do think improving the O-Line absolutely does give you a chance to compete next year even with an unimproved Defense simply because a real O-Line will allow for the offense to walk up and down the field and score at will like the lines in Greenbay and the Saints do.

The key thing with the Packers defense is that they seem to get timely turnovers that our defense just doesn't seem to get.

Anything is possible next season but I think most here who don't think the team will contend are just very discouraged because we keep seeing the same crap every year. In 07 after going 13-3 it appeared the window would be wide open for several years for the Cowboys to contend then the team fell flat in 08. In 09 the Cowboys won their first playoff game in 13 years and our hopes grew again but in 2010 the team fell flat again finishing 6-10.

This past 8-8 season confirmed what we saw in 2010 that the Cowboys are simply not a very good team. The Cowboys obviously lack talent, solid coaching and mental toughness. The organization could be headed for several more lean years if big changes aren't made to the personnel and to the teams culture. It's not about just making changes they're going to have to be the right changes or the team will continue spinning their wheels.
