I have posted a similar view on other sports sites. I can see people claiming he chokes at bad times etc, has never won but the visceral hatred he gets is simply not understandable given he has never done anything bad off the field, and is basically a good guy

It's the Cowboy QB thing in general, plus the element of actual Cowboy fans who blame him for everything. Add it up and that's what you get.

The NFL metwork has that top 10 list show and had a most hated current players on it. Romo came in about 7th or 8th on that one too.
All the comments said, "yeah, he's a great guy but I hate the Cowboys". Or else there was mention of "Jessica Simpson" or the "fumbled snap" 7 years ago.

Believe it or not, our man Roger Staubach was also one of the most hated players. It was more to do with him being "Captain America". All the other fan bases hated that with a passion. That's a lot of votes.

The first 6 make some sense, but Romo and Brady being on there is pure envy. And Te'o being on there is just sad. Kid was a victim. Why dislike him for being naive or ignorant?

I bet the Vikings hate him. It's a little different in the internet age. I'm sure that if Roger were the starter today, you'd hear plenty about how much opposing fans hate him. The hate from other teams is also amplified in the Jerry Jones era, he's probably the least popular owner in all of sports.
