Part of the problem is the bend but don't break scheme that Marinelli runs. If executed correctly it is good enough to beat most average to below average teams in the regular season but when you get into the playoffs and have to play a Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, It is going to get lit up because of its total vanilla nature. We have very little surprise element to it. I think we have more overall talent on our defense than the Steelers do, but Keith Butler's scheme keeps opposing QBs on edge. Even a 38 year old James Harrison can lead the team in sacks because they scheme him against a TE or RB.The problem is I don't see any real solutions in free agency this time around.
This was my fear all along when people were pimping Mayowa and Tapper and Irving and Lawrence in fall camp.............. that this team would run into a hot QB in a key game and the lack of pass rush would bite us. And it did.
You simply cannot expect to win a SB in this league without having the ability to get after the QB. And you can't get after the QB, you can't think that shopping the bargain bin is the solution to your pass rush woes.
This defense needs a major overhaul at almost every level - DE needs serious upgrading, DT seems fine, LB could use help but maybe Smith solves that, secondary could use some help. Sorry but bringing back the same CBs is not an option. I think it's time for Carr to go.
Just saying STEPHEN....you don't draft as well as Green Bay.../QUOTE]
How do you figure that???
Kawaan Short would be top of my list.
I live in NC and the word is that he will be signed long term. They let Norman walk so they could sign Short now,Kawaan Short would be top of my list.
