From 1994-2006, Mike Zimmer was an assistant coach with the Cowboys, serving as the defensive coordinator from 2000-06.
While Wade Phillips has never worked with Zimmer, there is a fraternity of coaches that tie them together, and he was saddened to hear of ZImmer's wife, Vikki, passing
"He's close to people I'm close too, like [Dave] Campo," Phillips said. "They're real close. It's sad to hear and obviously our condolences to the family and so forth, but it is a family. It's a big family."

Sobering news out of Cincinnati this morning. Vikki Zimmer, the wife of Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, died Thursday. I've known Mike for several years because he was the defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells in Dallas for three seasons and he was with the Cowboys from 1994 to 2005.
"We are stunned and saddened to learn of Vikki’s passing,” said Bengals president Mike Brown in a statement released Friday morning. “She was a warm and popular person in the Bengals family, and our immense respect and affection for Mike makes this especially hard. Our hearts are out to Mike and his family."
Mike's son, Adam, is an
assistant coach for the New Orleans Saints. Adam was a top-flight defensive back for Trinity (Texas) University and we exchange e-mails on a fairly regular basis. My heart goes out to the entire Zimmer family as they go through this profoundly difficult time.
I know some of you will ask what Mrs. Zimmer died from, so I'll just let you know that I'm not sure at this point.
