From 1994-2006, Mike Zimmer was an assistant coach with the Cowboys, serving as the defensive coordinator from 2000-06.

While Wade Phillips has never worked with Zimmer, there is a fraternity of coaches that tie them together, and he was saddened to hear of ZImmer's wife, Vikki, passing

"He's close to people I'm close too, like [Dave] Campo," Phillips said. "They're real close. It's sad to hear and obviously our condolences to the family and so forth, but it is a family. It's a big family."

Sobering news out of Cincinnati this morning. Vikki Zimmer, the wife of Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, died Thursday. I've known Mike for several years because he was the defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells in Dallas for three seasons and he was with the Cowboys from 1994 to 2005.

"We are stunned and saddened to learn of Vikki’s passing,” said Bengals president Mike Brown in a statement released Friday morning. “She was a warm and popular person in the Bengals family, and our immense respect and affection for Mike makes this especially hard. Our hearts are out to Mike and his family."

Mike's son, Adam, is an assistant coach for the New Orleans Saints. Adam was a top-flight defensive back for Trinity (Texas) University and we exchange e-mails on a fairly regular basis. My heart goes out to the entire Zimmer family as they go through this profoundly difficult time.

I know some of you will ask what Mrs. Zimmer died from, so I'll just let you know that I'm not sure at this point.

would be nice if the story said how she died, I just like to know such things.
I don't think anyone knows, yet.

It sounds so sudden, it could be any number of things from heart attack to aneurysm. It doesn't sound like she was sick or anything.

Poor woman..

The Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer made an emergency call to 911 after arriving home on Thursday night and discovering the lifeless body of his 50-year-old wife Vikki Zimmer.

According to the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office, foul play in not suspected in her death, but officials have not released any further details pending an autopsy.

Bengals president Mike Brown said, “We are stunned and saddened to learn of Vikki’s passing. She was a warm and popular person in the Bengals family, and our immense respect and affection for Mike makes this especially hard. Our hearts go out to Mike and his family.”

Zimmer has been an NFL defensive coordinator for 10-years, joining the Bengals in January 2008.

Vikki was born in Layton, Utah. She and Mike met during Mike’s coaching tenure at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah in 1981. They were married for 27 years and have three children. Their son Adam Zimmer is an assistant linebackers coach for the Saints.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Awful news - Zimmer family was definitely a good one. Also met them at training camp during the Campo years at the Alamo Dome.

Condolences and Prayers to Mike and his children. :(
