The Cowboys released a statement from owner and general manager Jerry Jones regarding the death of Vikki Zimmer, the wife of former Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

"We are heartbroken to hear of this loss, and our hearts go out to Mike, Adam, Corri and Marki," Jones said. "We remember Vikki for her vibrant love of life and her loving devotion to her family."

And the team passed on the thoughts from secondary coach Dave Campo:

"Well it's very sad from the standpoint that she was a wonderful lady," Campo said. "I go way back with Mike, going back to Weber State. I met my wife (Kay) at the same time that he met Vikki. This is a sad day because I feel the worst for the kids. They have three beautiful kids and in the coaching business, in many times, the kids are closer to their mother than they are their father because of the work schedule. That's the disappointing thing more than anything."

"I haven't talked to Mike. I just talked to Marvin Lewis right after it happened. I've texted him. I'll get to him when it's the right time."

What happened? was she sick? How awful. Prayers for the Zimmer family in a time of great sorrow.

I always liked Mike, a good 4-3 coordinator.

The Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer made an emergency call to 911 after arriving home on Thursday night and discovering the lifeless body of his 50-year-old wife Vikki Zimmer.

According to the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office, foul play in not suspected in her death, but officials have not released any further details pending an autopsy.

Bengals president Mike Brown said, “We are stunned and saddened to learn of Vikki’s passing. She was a warm and popular person in the Bengals family, and our immense respect and affection for Mike makes this especially hard. Our hearts go out to Mike and his family.”

Zimmer has been an NFL defensive coordinator for 10-years, joining the Bengals in January 2008.

Vikki was born in Layton, Utah. She and Mike met during Mike’s coaching tenure at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah in 1981. They were married for 27 years and have three children. Their son Adam Zimmer is an assistant linebackers coach for the Saints.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Man, thats just terrible. To discover your wife dead on arrival? Wow! I recently have a friend's wife die, who I also knew for 20 odd years. Its really tough, especially on kids. Hopefully Zimmers kids are not that young. I just feel so sad and depressed for Mike Zimmer.

Since it doesn't say anything about previous illness, it makes it really hard on Mike if this was unexpected. My really deep condolences to Mike Zimmer, who I always thought was a good DC and unfairly blamed for Defensive woos. But thats a different topic.

Zimmer will coach Sunday

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 10, 2009 5:15 PM ET

On Friday, we learned about the sad and sudden passing of Vikki Zimmer, the wife of Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

The reaction from the Bengals and from Dallas, where Zimmer coached for 13 years, were testimonies to the impact she had on Zimmer's family and his extended family -- his players.

Today the Bengals confirmed that Mike Zimmer will coach the Bengals defense against Baltimore on Sunday.

Keeping his family close during this difficult time, Zimmer brought his father, Bill, son Adam, and daughter Corri along with him to Baltimore. His mother and another son remained in Cincinnati, according to ESPN's James Walker.

No details of the death have been revealed, but Vikki Zimmer passed away at her home.

Once again our heart goes out to the entire Zimmer family.
