It's funny how the chickens are always being counted, but they don't hatch. Longest incubation period in history.

Why would selecting Lawrence not make sense?
Because we know what we have with Dak, we have no idea if Lawrence's college ability will translate to the NFL (so very many don't), and picking a QB with our first selection means one less high defensive pick. (possibly more, if we have the option of trading that pick for multiple slightly lower picks)

Lawrence and Fields are going to go 1 and 2 so the Cowboys will have no chance at either of them. And there are all kinds of unanswered questions about Dak and his contract. Do they sign him long term? How much Bonus do they give him, because that is going to be what they eat against their cap. The best move would be to not sign him. Then if they draft one of the two QBs they can trade him without any cap impact. If they don't get a QB they can still franchise Dak, although they have to clear a lot of cap space to do that. They also risk losing Dak the following year.

I just get the sense the best move is to sign Dak long term before the draft to a deal that is cap friendly in the first year. Then they can unload some bad contracts if they want.

A healthy Dak pushes QB way down the needs list. The Cowboys need help on all three levels on defense and one could even make a case for rebuilding the offensive line again (although Tyron Smith and La'el Collins are supposedly going to be 100 percent next year).
Tyron is good for missing 3 games a year. Hes turned into Sean Lee we should have been exploring his eventual replacement last year
