Frankenstorm

Just read that it's headed to Chicago and officials there are telling residents to stay away from Lake Michigan due to waves predicted to be 24 feet

My step mom lives off South Shore right by the lake. She should be at work, but if she doesn't, I hope she goes to my Dad's house to hang out until it passes.

It is nothing major here. Just the 60mph winds are creating like 20-30ft waves, and a little flooding by the lake.

Which is about what I expected as far as Lake Shore Drive and whatnot. I'm only concerned about my step mom, because her apartment building sits right at the lake and her area gets hit by waves on a good day.

I don't think they lost power. They started flooding in the lower floors so they had to evac for safety.

Why unacceptable?

This is what happens with these kind of storms.

Because every hospital is supposed to have back up generators sinse they have patients living on machines that require electricity. I thought that was fairly obvious.

Faerluna, I'm pretty sure they lost power and their back up generators failed. The generators failing is what is unacceptable.

Probably a case of one or two things...someone not keeping up on checking the generators or budget cuts that prevented proper upkeep.

Wow you guys got it pretty bad. I live in SC and I'm familiar with hurricanes. I'm a little surprised by the amount of damage I am hearing about though. I wouldn't expect that from a category 1...Most of those only feel like a glorified rain and wind storm, but I understand the circumstances are much different in this storm than most others. To those affected, please be safe. I was supposed to be flying into Newark, NJ on business tomorrow, but I had it changed to next week due to flight cancellation and also the mess that is going on up that way right now.

I've heard of cases where the generators were on the ground floor or lower levels and got flooded along with everything else.

Did anyone see the Bloomberg press conferences?

That lady doing the sign language had my full attention. Her facial expressions were so animated and fun to watch that I was almost in a hypnotic state watching her face.

I don't recall ever seeing someone doing sign language with so much animation and emotions in her face.

I watched a bit of CNN this morning and they were interviewing a family that was going to stay with relatives. The father looked dazed and traumatized. Despite warnings and preparation, it's still hard to understand how your life can get yanked from under you. Those homes looked like they were completely consumed, not just damaged.

Tragic, .. just tragic.

We lost power last summer for 6 days when it was over 90 degrees each day. You could not escape the heat. It was awful, .. and over the course of 6 days it affected the way you thought. It was weird, and each day made it worse.

But that was nothing compared to what these families are facing.

I cannot even imagine what these people are going through. My heart aches for them, I will keep them in prayer.

I'm happy!

:laugh2:

We have power but no cable or Internet. :(

What are gas lines like near you? Ours are about 1 mile long.

Oh and are you still in denial about the front of the building coming off?

Gas lines are not too bad. No giant lines like in NJ. The stations are busy, but lines of no more than 2-3 cars when at their busiest.

No, I saw the building. It should have been condemned.

I finally got my power. No gas in my town or in nearby towns.

Sam

What town is that? I need gas to get to work and the word is we will be in trouble for at least another week.

I've bee waiting on line or gas for the past hour and moved all of 10 feet. At 12:00 pm today a new rule goes into effect: if your license plate # ends in an even number you can get gas on an even numbered day. If it ends in an odd number you can get gas on an odd numbered day.

I guess it could be worse...there could be NO gas.

2 hours passed since your last post. Were you able to get gas?

Both my cars have even license plates. And today is the 3rd. I have to wait until tomorrow to get gas.

If anyone is up near CT, my friend in Bethel says that there are no lines. More specifically, Exit 5 off I-84 had 5 gas stations with no waiting.

Yup, 2.5 hrs later. Are you in NJ? NJ is the only place I know of rationing gas like I said before. They started doing it at 12:00 pm. Before then it was a free for all. The reason I actually had to wait so long was because the gas station had to wait for the police to arrive.
