So after several days of free agency frenzy...

We lost Cassel and Berney and signed one player. depending on contracts, that puts us a t 1 comp pick in 2017.........
Anyway.

Cassel we wanted gone, and I didn't expect Berney back, but would have been ok with him, as now we need to look at a back up C/G. This will be fine.

We resigned 6 of our own players. I know some think this is not a step up, and put it down, but it is also not bad at all. Just bring in some TC competition.
These players know the system and schemes, so name players that would be better if you have issues with them. We do have many roster spots open to bring others in.

Brown offers depth for competition, and he was on the roster most of the year, so they think something of him.
Hanna, good signing, as Escobar may start out on PUP.
McClain, some have issues with him, but I am one of those that don't. Concerned, yes, but don't have an issue with him signing.
Wilber, as I been saying wanted someone better, but I can't say who, so I will go with the coaches, and be ok with this. He knows the system.
Claiborne, very good signing also, needed this
Thomas, well, we need CB competition in TC, can't be any worse than some other teams same type CB.

Cedric Thornton, great signing, does this mean the end of Hayden, who knows. But it should be.

So we had 18 UFA, 2 RFA, we lost 2, signed 1, and signed 6 of our own. Tendered the 2 RFA.
They released 2 players that were on reserve / futures contracts. This by my count, we have 61 players under contract, 2 RFA and 10 UFA left. not all which will be back.

At this point, I hope they bring someone in like Chris Long, and draft a DE at some point. Move on from Hardy [though I wouldn't mnd if he signed] in order to get a nice 3rd round comp pick next year.
Dunbar and Turbin at RB, just draft Elliot, then either of these will be fine to sign, or someone else.
Clutts, just draft Vitale in the 6th.
McCray, well we can do better, as Heath is a RFA too, so depends if he stays.
5 UFA on DL, Hardy, mincey, who I think will be back if Hardy isn't, Jack Crawford and Hayden, make it Crawford. And a guy named Walker...too bad it's not Chuck Norris' Walker...Defense solved if we could get him....LOL...

So it will now probably be slower over the next week or two on all this. Hope some good solid moves at least for depth is made.

Very good post. The people that are flipping out about us not making any splashy signings are short-sided.

Here's my issue.

The goal of any offseason is to try and improve. And you can do that between FA and the draft. The Thornton signing solves an issue for sure. So that was a nice signing.

But are you really going to be happy with having basically the exact same secondary as last year with maybe a 3rd round DB thrown in there somewhere and hoping Scandrick is healthy? I wouldn't be.

Chris Long would be a nice depth move but who is the pass rusher on this team. Who improves that pass rush? A mid to later round DE isn't going to do that.

This isn't a post to suggest we should have thrown cash around like crazy in FA but it is slightly bizarre that this front office seems to think what we had last year was pretty damn good and there is no reason to try to fix some areas other than thinking they'll kill the draft.

I kind of like the position that the secondary is in as of now. We only have three guys that we know for sure will be here next year. Scandrick and Jones - our best two and both on friendly contracts. Mo will be here, but he is only on a one year deal and just had his best year. Carr and Church need to be upgraded, but both are on the last year of their contracts and it does seem that we are looking for relatively low cost upgrades through free-agency and there is the very real chance that we will draft a db or 2 or 3 in the draft. A secondary with Jones and Ramsey or Weddle at safety and a healthy Scandrick, Mo, Carrol, a draft pick and one of our guys that showed a little at the end of the year, is actually pretty good. I would rather have that secondary for the next year or two and be able to resign our OLine studs and DLaw than have gone for a big named CB now and then said goodbye to Martin or DLaw in a couple of years.

I am a little more concerned with the pass rush simply because I don't expect a rookie to do too much his first year and there just aren't very many quality pass rushers left in free agency.

I hope what you say is true......... that somewhere in the next few weeks between now and then the conclusion of the draft that they find upgrades to Carr and Church and neither is on the roster.

I just have a funny suspicion what we are going to get opening day will look awfully similar to what we saw last year.

Our dline is worse than last years, and last years d line was trashy and worthless. We need to get better on the dline not just stay the same. We need to have a top 10 d line to compete.

Romo only has 1-2 years left regardless of what jerry says, lets try to win now instead of " building for the future". Spend that cash baby!

They are still trying to bring Carroll in apparently

I think out interior DL is better simply because Hayden is gone. Thornton was a key signing inside. I like Crawford and Irving at the 3 Tech and we might draft another DT as well.

But DE is a wasteland beyond Lawrence.

Very true. Im having a hard time seeing the Dline provide 35-40 sacks. All of last years playoff teams had 42-53 sacks.

Not a top-10 defensive line, but better than last year's.

Lawrence had a good season.
Thornton is worlds better than Hayden... no comparison.
No Hardy (yet). The was a good player last year, but wasn't on the field for 4 games and not dominant when he did play.
Mincey- No sacks. Gone.
T. McClain did not play most of the season due to the toe injury.
T. Crawford played with a torn rotator cuff for most of the season.
Yeah Gregory is gone for 4 games, but he contributed little last season after his high ankle sprain.

At this point I'm good with 3 of the 4 starters.

Yeah there are holes, but I still think it's shaping up to be a better defensive line than last season.

Yep. I think we should bring back Hardy for a year and draft the best DL at 34 (most likely an interior). I think we need to give T. Crawford some help (and some competition) at 3-tech. I'd be happy going into the season with a DL of:

WDE - Hardy/Gregory
3DT - Crawford/rookie
1DT - Thornton/McClain
SDE - Lawrence/Irving

That's not including Russell and Jack Crawford (if resigned) who can help out at DE and DT.

Yeah Gregory's situation really weakens the DE spot. Even if a rookie is drafted early, you probably can't expect much in year 1. I'm still hoping something can be worked out with Hardy.

Weddle would be a nice addition but can't imagine we'd get into a bidding war for him.

Yep. Hardy and Weddle would be my ideal free agents. That was when I thought we could get Weddle for cheap. We need to address WDE and SS in free agency before the draft. That way we can go into the draft and get the best players available.

The front office is thinking that last year was just a fluke and it was all due to Romo and Dez being hurt. Jerry has said it himself that he thinks the talent on this team is way better than 4-12, so the plan is to add a guy or two in free agency to responsible contracts and resign most of our own players. Hence, I would anticipate most of our starters are going to be the same from last year to this year.

So that is the gamble.................we shall see if the gamble pays off.

I'm right there with you... I'd like to see Hardy resigned and a high pick used at #34.
