this team with their actions believes that if tony and dez are healthy they will be competitive in their division. their are not many players in the draft that will make a huge difference in the record they are betting on health and the team they last year.
One, that's not true. Rookies make huge contributions to teams all the time.
Two, the argument keeps getting made that rookies don't put up big stats, with the implication being that our team from last year is unlikely to get better by doing nothing but adding a few rookies as a result. That fails to take into account the exact same idea that the players we did invest in a year or two ago who are in the pipeline ought to be hitting their stride right now as we speak. Players like Crawford and Lawrence and Gregory and even Irving are right at the age where their development should be paying off for us. The rookies are just incoming reinforcements to backfill those young players in their primes and to take the place of any of them who flame out.
What we're missing is an alternative at the rush end spot, for sure. We need to sign a vet there for insurance, especially since Gregory is, unfortunately, completely unreliable. We have options in-house (moving Crawford or Irving outside, for example). But they're pretty ugly. We do need to cover ourselves with at least one VFA addition here prior to the draft.
