Melton might come at a discount due to injury and might want to reunite with Rod

How are we paying for these guys?

I've posted this info multiple times, but here it is again:

Cut Ware
Cut Austin on June 1st
Restructure Romo
Restructure Carr
Restructure Witten
Restructure Lee

Cap Space available after the above moves: $14,071,693

1st year cap hit of Carr's 50M contract: $3,200,000

You can really fit any kind of 5 year deal under the salary cap. I think it's more a matter of how do you later fit that player in year 4 of the deal, plus Dez and Tyron in year 2 of their new deals.

Here is the multiple year projection:

Cut Ware

Restructure Romo
Restructure Carr
Restructure Witten
Restructure Lee

Year Cap Room
2014 $14,071,693
2015 $20,014,618 (another restructure of Romo and Carr would free up another 20M here)
2016 $50,492,874
2017 $71,130,250
2018 $100,194,000
2019 $109,652,000

So we guarantee more money to Romo, Lee, Witten and Carr? That is a serious issue for me.

There is no way around it. All four of these players are like banks to allow our inept front office to clear cap space year after year.

That part is not entirely true. The new CBA only allows amortization of bonus money over 5 years of a contract. If a player is signed for more than 5 years, the contracts are generally structured so that you can amortize money over all years in the contract, and is really no different than how any other team does business. Now what I just said is true for a player like Romo, but I agree with your main point that we are doing it too much and shouldn't have been messing around with someone like Miles Austin this past offseason.

If I had a farm to bet, I'd bet it that we're targeting Melton. Might even be able to get a discount on him thanks to Marinelli, that knee, Texas, and that little "misunderstanding" at the bar.

What about the scenario of restructuring Ware as well? I don't remember you going over it before.

Restructuring Ware has a similar effect on 2014 as cutting him; however, it would push 11M into future years.

Ware's issues:
Age 32
2012: Shoulder injury. Off-season surgery.
2013: Shoulder/neck/stinger issues
2013: Back Injury
2013: Both elbows injured and will require surgery
2013: Thigh injury. Missed games with this one.

Unless we release Ware or he takes a serious pay cut, along with restructuring several others we won't be players in FA like we need to.

DE
Greg Hardy Probably franchised
Michael Johnson Cincinnati has spent money on DT and some other players. They've been known to be cheap.
Michael Bennett Will be looking for a starting job somewhere. 8.5 sacks as a backup in 2013. His idiot brother is MartyB.
Corey Wootton Started 15 games for Chicago in 2013. Played for Marinelli in 2012.
Matt Shaughnessy Played 3-4 OLB in 2013 but played in a 4-3 DE in previous years.

DT
Henry Melton Injured in 2013. Chicago has about 29 free agents.
Linval Joseph Only 25. A 1-tech that has some pass rush ability.
Arthur Jones He is a 3-4 DE, but looks like a 4-3 DT.
Lamarr Houston He is a 4-3 DE in Oakland but would be a 3-tech on most 4-3 defenses.
Clinton McDonald Listed as a DE but is a DT. He had 5.5 sacks as a backup in 2013.
Tyson Jackson Started 9 of 15 games in 2013 as a 3-4 DE. Might be good as a 3-tech at 6-4, 296.

Melton could be risky coming off the ACL, plus not a RKG for Garrett and Chi has a ton of cap space.
Linval Joseph is a major priority for the giants- they paid canty, probably pay jospeh
Oakland has a ton of cap space, if they don't re-sign Houston that would be foolish.
Michael Johnson turned down 5 years 40 million last year, then his production decreased from 12 sacks to 3?
What happened to Michael Johnson?
Greg Hardy wants 12/mill a year probably won't be available with tag.

I just don't see the big name signing on the d- line but I do see us trying out additional depth.
Jarius Byrd is a possibility at Safety but he wants 5 years 40 mill

I also think Demarcus Ware is back and still can produce double digit sacks. One bad season is not enough sample to call a trend, plenty of d-ends have been productive to age 37. I belive Jerry will restructure Ware, sign a veteran safety, and go early in the draft for DT and Guard.

Totally agree. If you have Melton at the 3 with Bass backing him up, then another FA or high draft pick at the 1 with Hayden backing them up you have fixed the biggest problem. I do think Ware restructures and Spencer takes a one year incentive based deal, with Crawford and Selvie backing them up.
