I see Byron Jones as the future at free safety for us. I think he has the potential to be a great free safety, not so much as a cornerback though. I'd like to see him featured there in the offseason.

That being said, I don't think it would be wise to sign a free agent at a high price as well, and then play either him or Jones out of position at strong safety. You can have two free safeties out there, and maybe that is the way the new NFL should be, but I think one of these guys is probably going to be underutilized out there given the resources involved.

I really doubt Eric Berry will get away.

But Weddle would be a great fit back there with Byron.

Wilcox and Church as subs gives you great depth, and, all of a sudden, S is a position of strength.

Last time Weddle was a FA, he wanted $10M a year. If he's looking for that again, no thanks.
Berry will likely be franchised.
Wilcox should be gone. As should Heath. If you can draft an upgrade over Church, great. Otherwise, he probably stays as a starter.
Jerry and the rest of the brass just seem unable to get the safety position right. It's been a weakness for a decade.

I'm not sure Weddle is the greatest option. I think the biggest factor is going to be his price tag. I agree that the Chiefs aren't going to let Berry walk out the door.

My biggest questions with Weddle are age and health. He wouldn't be the worst option but in the grand scheme of things, he's merely a stop gap. If his contract demands are in line with that type of thinking then it's worth a look. It wasn't long ago that Weddle was the highest paid safety in the league and he wanted a contract extension with the Chargers before the beginning of this past season. Again, if a deal can get done that isn't a back breaker, it's worth a look. We could certainly do worse than a Jones/Weddle combo at the tail end of the defense.

I would almost rather draft a kid or sign someone younger. I wouldn't hate signing Weddle, but I would hope that frugality would be a big part pf the thought process when it comes to a guy with that kind of mileage.

I would almost rather sign a younger guy or draft the right kid, this season.

If Jones is one safety and you sign another to start in free agency, Church can't stay unless you do something with his contract. Church carries a $4.8MM cap hit and if you cut him, you save pretty much all of that. You can't carry a back up safety at nearly $5MM per year.

If Church isn't starting either he should be cut or significantly restructure his deal.

That's fair. Cut him. lol

I just don't think Weddle is going to be very expensive, so it would be a pretty low-risk signing.

Surprised more people don't talk about Tashaun Gipson.

i was along that same thought train until i started watching tape on him,he isnt a ballhawk as such, most of his interceptions are on bad throws-over thrown or when the qb has a tipped pass,a guy im intrigued by is robert golden from the steelers,i see alot of promise in him alongside bj

Eric Berry should be the priority until he is no longer available. It's a weird situation since he's a Franchise-caliber player but probably won't be Franchise Tagged. The safe money is that he re-signs before the beginning of free agency; he is loved there and he is a loyal kid.

If he happens to hit the open market, the Cowboys need to take that same plane to Kansas City they did for Brandon Carr and woo him. Berry is a huge difference maker and would be the crown jewel of free agency.

Weddle is 31 years old, why would you want him? If we need a safety then draft one.

Weddle is not good anymore, people. Stop clamoring over a name.

I'd gladly take Tashaun Gipson over Weddle.

Gipson is the baby daddy of my cousin's kids. I remember when he got the invite to Browns TC out of the University of Wyoming. I didn't even pay much attention to their situation for quite some time. I remember watching NFL Network's top 100 players last year and saw Tashaun on the list. I had completely forgotten that he had ever gotten a shot in the NFL let alone made the roster. For him to be a top 100 as a kid from a smaller university like UW was pretty impressive. I'll have to call my cousin and tell her that that she probably REALLY wants to live in Dallas.
