From my observation we're getting torched by RB's coming out of the flat vs the deep balls. If we can push the line and jam receivers our LBers can play up a little more.

I hear all the time, on this board, about how Jerry and Stephen, can always find a way to work the cap. Well, this is a show me kinda moment. If you can get Byrd for a late round pick, then you seriously need to consider how you get that done.

You're talking a $7 mil hit for Byrd. Right now the Cowboys have about $2 mil. The team would need to release many players to accommodate the guy. And it would leave nothing for an emergency signing.

On top of that I would be very leery about Byrd's foot issue.

We'd be giving up a pick just to give up a pick then because most likely they're not going to be able to sign him to a huge long term deal he'll be looking for after this season. So we'd give up a pick to rent a player for this season? Why? He's not going to improve the pass rush.

No its not. Go look at the Monroe and Brown trades. The teams that traded those players paid part of the salary thats left. Also dallas only take on base salary left for the season not any bonuses or past salary from this year.

Money wouldn't be a issue.

You realize monroe had a salary of 3.8 mill, brown had a salary of 3 mill AND allen is 14.2 mill and byrd is 7 mill.

That is a huge jump in numbers to be relying on those teams to pay some of their salary for us.

Where did you get the 7 Million number from?

that's what he makes now - 8/20/2013: Signed a one-year, $6.916 million contract. The deal is fully guaranteed. 2014: Free Agent

I have now idea why we would pay that much for 3/4 of a season

I don't think that's the number we would pay. His full salary is that but I think that number would be pro-rated and, I believe that if he's traded, that number can also be re-negotiated through contract extension.

Perhaps somebody who has more insight into the details of this can chime in.

So he missed camp and the fist five games of the season? Think I'll pass.

Somebody needs to keep Jay Ratliff, Anthony Spencer, and Matt Johnson company. Need another to make a foursome for golf. :(:)

I took his franchise figure, which is like $6.9 mil.

But even if it were say $4 mil... The team would have to gut the roster in order to make the room.

Also keep in mind the foot issue Bryd is dealing with.

various:
can not be renegotiated because he is playing under a tag.
yes, we'd be liable for whatever percentage of season is left in cap cost and salary.

he wants 8+m a year long term.

no, we can not restructure romo (already did that this year); no we can not cut miles or ratliff (they'd cost us when we cut them not save us money.)

byrd hasn't played at all since last season.
he'd be a good safety if he was healthy and knows the scheme.
he would be a bad choice as a stop gap who might need a month to get in shape and learn the defense... see waters but 3 weeks later in the season and at twice the cost.

Byrd makes sense for a team who is a contender that also planned to get better at Safety the next off-season.
He makes near zero sense here.

Because of our handling of contracts it is nearly impossible for us to clear 4m dollars right now without a full on bloodletting.

Who can say how much "The Foot Issue" is being driven by the "Desire To Be Elsewhere" thing? I have not heard that the foot is career threatening or something that put him on the shelf for a season. However, I have really not kept up with that issue so there may be something there I am not aware of but if he can come back and play, that helps a whole bunch of stuff on Defense.

As far as the 4 million, again, I think you can re-negotiate that though contract extension so it doesn't necessarily have to be 4 million. Does anybody know the rules on how this can work in a trade such as this?

You make good points ABQ.

I would suggest reading JT's post above for some of the answers.

The other reason I would "stay the course" with Church and Wilcox because I don't think safety is the big problem with the defense at the moment. I like the potential of Wilcox and for the most part I like what Church has done.

I think the defense has bigger needs.

I'm of the opinion that if you can upgrade a position, then you do that and Byrd, he's definitely an upgrade.

No thanks, we have too many players due extensions to go sign the next shiny toy available.
