I say, every year we need to draft at least 1 offensive lineman no later than the 3rd round for depth situations. This year, we need defensive linemen, especially a great pass rusher. A free safety, punt returner & punter. Also would not be adverse to bringing in a good back up QB in case Romo goes down. If he goes down this year, we're probably doomed.

I'd guess we have better depth than many. Bernadeau isn't great, but he's a borderline starter in the league. Most teams don't have that on their Oline. Any team in the league is looking at problems with multiple OLine or DLine injuries.

Good point, but if we lose Smith or Fred, the dynamics of this team changes a lot. We will then go back to being pass-happy.

Keep stacking offensive lineman IMO :D

Martin played Left Tackle at ND and was outstanding, he could play right tackle easily

Im an ND fan and while he was a good OT in college he doesn't have the lateral agility to handle NFL edge rushers. He doesn't have the body or the skill set of a top NFL OT, right or left. He wont embarrass himself, but he'll be a down grade from Free and most definitely not worth the 16th pick at RT

I agree in theory, but I don't think you bend the draft to do that early. And how many teams would survive the loss of an all pro level tackle and an above average center very well?

I'll say it for years:

Draft a young, stud QB to groom.

Not yet. I would much rather spend our high picks on OL, DL, or DB. This team is built to win now and Romo still has 6 years left on that contract. Wait one more year to draft a QB, especially since I don't see any QB's in this draft that I really like anyways. At least not any where we'll be picking.

Not many but there is no bending the draft. There will always be an above-average lineman in the 1st round due to skill players being taken early. Now, if there is not a can't miss available, then go defense.

We are winning because of our offensive line which makes a run game, that can't be ignored. We need more depth, quality at that.

The problem is you're drafting replacements in the 1st, not depth. Right now the only player you would draft to replace is Free, and if he's willing to take a reasonable deal I see no reason to ditch him. Free is probably around average to a small tick below, very viable as the weak link of a line. Also I'd say look at what's been happening the last couple of years in the draft and I don't think you can say linemen are sliding that frequently any more.

I would draft Free and Leary's replacements if they are of the same quality of our other three. I am not saying draft depth in the 1st round, only legit starters.

Stockpile picks, find the BPA in the areas of need. Other teams eventually adapt and you have to switch some things around in order to prevent them from catching up to you.

Drafting STs players is just a bad idea.

I said draft defense from rounds 2 through 7 who would provide depth(for those who would not start) and can also contribute on ST's. I did not say draft a gunner or something

Just say no to drafting any defensive player with our first pick in the next draft. Get another stud OLineman, grab a DE in the 2nd then concentrate on ST players and more rotational guys. Can always go FA for more defense if needed.

It is clear that a dominant line controls games, they just wear the defenses down. Keep drafting offensive lineman early to keep a stable OL for years.

Lets keep this run identity going and add defensive players as they come along.

Whether they decide to keep Murray or not, Randle better be here for awhile.....I like his game. I am not sure he can carry the load for 4 quarters but he is a nice back-up.

Sign/draft a good DE, fix the ST's and maybe get a new returner....that is my shortlist. Oh, get a new punter too.

So far, two of the three phases are coming together :)

Ugh! No more drafts for special teams players please, just draft good players that can push (& eventually replace) the starters and can also play special teams

Drafting someone who you think could be a difference maker on special teams is a good idea. Doing it in the first three to four rounds is a terrible idea. If you're telling me the likely happenstance is a backup player vs a special teams ace I'll pretty much tell you which is likely to be more of an impact.

Extend Bill Callahan first and foremost...

Gosh, let me repeat........I do not want to draft a player who only plays special teams! I want guys who would be good depth, push for starting jobs that can also play ST's......
