Don't worry, the Russians are still playing their own version of world order and we've started giving life saving supplies in Iraq with targeting to follow.

Sorry, the real world still bruises my heart strings...and I do a little language escape from time to time.

I backed off the notion of the defense just showing a little hostility up front, and behind the line of scrimmage starting their own black and blue zone.

Some of us get it, CC....it didn't go over my head!!

The defensive line was rushing up the field hard while the linebackers couldn't get off their blocks, which created huge running lanes for the SD running backs. All night.

A lot of guys weren't playing so I'm willing to chalk this up to preseason game number 1, but there are a ton of things for the Cowboys to work on.

It's normal for teams to play the new guys to see what they have. Some people show up in games and not as much in practice. You didn't see much of our starting DL so I wouldn't get too upset....yet. We don't cover for our LBers in this defense but you can't play the run as a LB when the DL is getting killed. You don't have any angles and there is no gap control.

I didn't see much of the game so I can't comment O/W. But again this is where you look at people you want as backups and to find the occasional starter. You also get a decent look at who will be the STers.

The defense will look better with your starting DL in the game.....I hope.

the disdain for the "run stoper" Dixon has to stop.in case you guys havent noiced we couldnt stop the run last year and this year seems to be more of the same. Our linemen seemed more interested in rushing up field at all times, sometimes its not about the rush but clogging up the lanes and getting off blocks and the rookie linemen are not taught this at all.

See, now...I know this was supposed to help me out, but now I"m even more confused, I think. :)

Let me tell you 'bout Ahab the Arab
The Sheik of the burning sand
He had emeralds and rubies just dripping off a him
And a ring on every finger of his hands

He wore a big ol' turban wrapped around his head
And a scimitar by his side
And every evening about midnight
He'd jump on his camel named Clyde and ride

Silently through the night to the Sultan's tent
Where he would secretly meet up with Fatima of the Seven Veils
Swingingest grade A number one U.S. choice dancer
In the Sultan's whole harem

'Cause heh, him and her had a thing going
You know and they'd been carrying on for some time now
Behind the Sultan's back and you could hear him talk to his camel
As he rode out across the dunes

His voice would cut through the still night desert air
And he'd say
[Foreign Content]
Which is Arabic for, "Stop, Clyde!"
Clyde would say
[Foreign Content]
Which is camel for, "What the heck did he say anyway?"
Well

He brought that camel to a screeching halt
At the rear of Fatima's tent, jumped off Clyde
Snuck around the corner and into the tent he went
There he saw Fatima laying on a zebra skin rug
Wearing rings on her fingers and bells on her toes
And a bone in her nose ho, ho

There she was friends, lying there in all her radiant beauty
Eating on a raisin, grape, apricot, pomegranate
Bowl of chitterlings, two bananas, three Hershey bars
Sipping on a "R C" Cola listening to her transistor
Watching the Grand Ole Opry on the tube
Reading the Mad magazine while she sung
"Does your chewing gum lose it's flavor?"

And Ahab walked up to her and he said
[Foreign Content]
Which is Arabic for, "Let's twist again like we did last summer, baby" You know what I mean! Whew!
She looked up at him from off the rug
Give him one of the sly looks
She said, "Crazy crazy crazy cray"
'Round and around and around and around and around and around
And that's the story 'bout Ahab the Arab
The Sheik of the burnin' sand
Ahab the Arab the swinging Sheik of the burnin' sand

I'm glad you mentioned Hayden; I did not want to be critical. I watched him on most defensive plays (only because he was the only player I knew by number) and he was constantly engaged in doing a cha-cha with the o-lineman and was usually going backwards.

He may have been a savior last year but if he makes the team this year then the depth on the interior d-line is in trouble.

My take was that Bishop and Coleman played relatively well. They held at the point of attack pretty well and were disruptive. Bishop was getting double teamed nearly every play and was still a force. Coleman had a lot of penetration but does need to work on awareness. Dixon was a thumper and I believe he made the team last night but time will tell. I'm really rooting for Mitchell but he is going to have problems with the new tighter rules (I wonder if the NFL's darling Richard Sherman is going to be held to the same standard). Crawford reminded me of "Almost Anthony" as he was close a couple of times but didn't close the deal. Is it me or did Carter look like he was running with cement shoes? I also believe Hitchens earned a spot at least for serious consideration. He went a long way towards justifying his draft last night with his ability to read the play and be in on the tackle. Did Holloman play?

On offense??? We are going to be scary good with our starters. Once that oline settled down (read Martin) we crushed their starting and 2nd dline. Randle and Williams both looked good but I think Randle played with more strength while Williams was able to cut harder... the battle continues. Escobar is open.... always. He reminds me of a young Witten. He isn't the fleetest of foot but just seems to find the open spot. Benford doesn't make the team. I'll go on record with that right now. He couldn't get seperation from even the 3rd stringers. Byrd made a couple of nice grabs but you expect that from someone with time under his belt. Boyd better show up in the next couple of games if he wants a spot on the 53 because right now it's Dez, TWill, Beastly, Harris, Street, and Byrd.

Just my thoughts... how about yours?

dixon was 1000 times better than heath imho.
he actually runs and makes tackles unlike heath who runs and misses tackles.
heath is very athletic but he has terrible instincts for the game in every way.
dixon will make this team.

the dl was just terrible. the lb was probably worse. they couldn't cover or stop the run.
crawford was in and out of the game in a blink.
we were ghastly bad but some of that was just design.
sd played philip rivers and played their 9 year vet back up QB into the 2nd half, lol of preseason game 1.
bishop and coleman are keepers that you play 10-15 snaps a game right now.
playing those dudes all those snaps was just about gaining experience and film.

hitchens will be a solid LB for us eventually, but asking that in year 1 is crazy.
at least he will get there, i didnt see another LB that can ever start for a winning team in this league.
bruce carter was a coverage linebacker at unc but in the nfl he is absolutely dreadful in coverage. any type of coverage.

poor 41 was as bad a db as i've ever seen.
he literally looked like what you'd expect a guy out of the stands to look like.
he held every play and was burned anyway every play.
i feel bad for that guy because this tape will mean he probably can't even get a shot for semi-pro teams.

Don't hold back, JT!
Always good to see your analysis.

My guess he meant that a little native in the mix might right the ship some...and even reflect in a team attitude on the defensive side of the ball. Oh, that was me commenting with verse from an old Country Western song...Clyde, the Camel as a focus.
Hey, that wasn't C&W -- that was 1962 pop radio, Ray Stevens: "A-hab the A-rab".

Bingo, you named the song correctly, I was just going for the novelty in reference.

Ray Stevens
(born Harold Ray Ragsdale, January 24, 1939)[2] is an American country[3] and pop singer-songwriter musician and comedian.[4][5]

I wasn't trying to lead astray...I always thought of Ray Stevens as Country Western that dabbled in pop. That was a transitional period between the two, although.

"Ahab the Arab" is a novelty song recorded by Ray Stevens in 1962.

I think it's unfair to judge Hitchens too much off this game, simply due to the fact that the DL was getting pushed into the LBs lap every play. Imagine having to sidestep your own lineman off the snap then locate the runner in your first NFL action. Unfortunately, this will probably keep happening through the pre season and probably during the regular season too. Learning to read the lineman and locate open gapes is border line impossible (especially for a rookie) when the line of scrimmage is now at your feet. Not saying Hitchens is a pro bowler, just saying let's give it some more time

the disdain for the "run stoper" Dixon has to stop.

It's not just Dixon. There is a sizable contingent on the forum that's scared of any safety that doesn't look and play like a corner. Ghosts of Roy Williams' past still haunt their dreams. Because, you know, safeties that can play like corners and still take on a RB one on one are a dime a dozen.

I don't think the issue with Coleman is strength... The guy put up 35 reps at his pro-day.

It's his "hand-fighting". He has to do a much better job.
