Strength is a factor at the professional level of in fighting and intensity levels. That takes an adjustment and some development beyond just technique.

Crawford was the only defensive lineman that stood out to me. Randle, Escobar, Williams, and Beasley all looked good on offense.

I think he may end up being one of our top 1-2 defensive linemen. I realize that is not saying much.

Agree with most of this

Pro
Williams and Randle looked a little beter than I expected.
Nice to see Escobar and Hanna in the passing game.
Oline showed well overall
I thought Dixon showed much more promise than Heath. 11 tackles although he did whiff on the horsecollar play and may have bit or blown one coverage on the long TD. He takes good angles and is a sure tackler. Played good ST

Cons
Thought Hitchens was awful. I dont know if my package has all22 on pre-season, but he overran or misread almost every play except the goalline tackle.
Holloman looked to be on the ground way too much
Hated the last drive before halftime - wheter Weeden checkdown or Garret played conservative I dont know
Sam general cowboys game feel. Aforementioned drive - no urgency to the line, clock the ball, fumbled snap. 10 yard drop on a 3rd and 1 turning INCOMPLETE after running well. Negating sacks on 3rd down with a penalty. I know its first game, but it felt familiar.

  • I feel a little better about backup RB
  • Yes, Dixon has a good chance to stick

  • You're being way too hard on Hitchens given it was his first game. He actually did make a few plays out there. I left feeling better, not worse, about the guy.
  • Yes, hated the dump offs in the middle of the field with a running clock on that drive before half.

I don't know what the point Nick Hayden being on the roster. He seems like a nice guy but between his poor feet and lack of anchor he gets destroyed every snap 1v1.
This was my #1 issue also. The other 3 guys that started on DL looked OK, but it's hard for them to do anything when the 1-tech can't draw a double-team and can't do anything against single-blocking. My thought after a few plays was "get Josh Brent in here".

Ken Bishop wasn't great, but he was better than Hayden and has upside. I actually loved the play where Bishop made the horse-collar tackle. That required impressive athleticism for a guy his size and would have been a TD if he didn't do it.

Terrell McClain need to get healthy.

I don't think the issue with Coleman is strength... The guy put up 35 reps at his pro-day.

It's his "hand-fighting". He has to do a much better job.

strength that matters for a DL is in generating power and leverage via his legs.
a lot of terrible DTs can put up 30+ reps.
i could put up 30+ reps and would get skated across a field by Gavin Escobar.

Coleman needs more leg drive for sure if he is going to play on running downs.

Thanks fuzzy. Not much I disagree with. All the young guys have a long way to go.

And ultimately, that looked like the first preseason game. Pretty much what I expected.

It will be interesting to see if they go with 4 RBs or 3. Not sure Williams plays ST.

Dixon seemed to cover the one crossing route ok (compared to every other route where it seemed the receiver was 15 yards separated). He did bite on tht long TD throw. Not sure of his responsibility though he didnt seem to start out deep where he would be have two deep responsibility.

Maybe its a fair point on Hitchens. he looked very slow. I guess you can say he kept with it and made the clutch play after a series of bad ones. To me he was 80/20-90/10 good plays to bad. Dixon seemed to be the flipside.

It's normal for teams to play the new guys to see what they have. Some people show up in games and not as much in practice. You didn't see much of our starting DL so I wouldn't get too upset....yet. We don't cover for our LBers in this defense but you can't play the run as a LB when the DL is getting killed. You don't have any angles and there is no gap control.

I didn't see much of the game so I can't comment O/W. But again this is where you look at people you want as backups and to find the occasional starter. You also get a decent look at who will be the STers.

The defense will look better with you starting DL in the game.....I hope.

This is is a great point. The DLine looked awful and the LBs on whole looked atrocious, couldnt shed blocks and ended up on the ground alot.

The 27-7 score was a little misleading. Every defensive unit, - our 2 to their 1s, our 2-s to 2s, 3s to 2s, 2s to 3s etc. - looked the same - outmanned.

I agree with plenty of this, but the lb'ers were sold down the river by the atrocious line play. Bishop, as mentioned has some potential, as does Coleman. Hayden conversely needs to go.
Despite his struggles I do like how Mitchell competes. Heath is horrific, sorry but I see no potential there whatsoever.
Offensively I was pleasently surprised by Weeden and Randle (though I wasn't as down on him as others), Williams has potential but his protection might see him on the outside looking in. Escobar will be a BIG weapon for this team.

Agreed, wholeheartedly.

Davon Coleman needs to get stronger. He certainly is athletic enough to play in this league but he needs better bubble to anchor and needs better upper body strength to fight off blocks and shed them. He is nowhere near ready to play.

Coleman is quite possibly the strongest guy on the team. It's between him and Smith. He's an undrafted rookie. He has a ways to go, but I like the potential.

Mincey may not be the swiftest DE but he is physical on the edge and quick enough to run line games with.

Mincey is the least athletic weakside DE in the league. Crawford is twice the athlete, twice the player. Selvie would be a better option at WDE. Mincey is garbage.

I certainly noticed when Bishop came in. He was hardly perfect but at least he offered resistance. He is raw as a ribeye cut straight from the cow. You can see him taking to coaching as he is using the technique but he is a beat slow to drop the knee on the double team and his footwork needs to get better on the stretch play. He had his issues but he seem the only DT capable of competing on run downs on the evening.

Agreed. Bishop showed much more than Hayden. Hayden is garbage.

I am going to rewatch but I have no impression on Crawford.

He got some good pressure on one play, the last he played. I wasn't focusing too much on him either. He's a player though. Still shaking of some of the rust.

Let me tell you 'bout Ahab the Arab
The Sheik of the burning sand
He had emeralds and rubies just dripping off a him
And a ring on every finger of his hands

He wore a big ol' turban wrapped around his head
And a scimitar by his side
And every evening about midnight
He'd jump on his camel named Clyde and ride

Silently through the night to the Sultan's tent
Where he would secretly meet up with Fatima of the Seven Veils
Swingingest grade A number one U.S. choice dancer
In the Sultan's whole harem

'Cause heh, him and her had a thing going
You know and they'd been carrying on for some time now
Behind the Sultan's back and you could hear him talk to his camel
As he rode out across the dunes

His voice would cut through the still night desert air
And he'd say
[Foreign Content]
Which is Arabic for, "Stop, Clyde!"
Clyde would say
[Foreign Content]
Which is camel for, "What the heck did he say anyway?"
Well

He brought that camel to a screeching halt
At the rear of Fatima's tent, jumped off Clyde
Snuck around the corner and into the tent he went
There he saw Fatima laying on a zebra skin rug
Wearing rings on her fingers and bells on her toes
And a bone in her nose ho, ho

There she was friends, lying there in all her radiant beauty
Eating on a raisin, grape, apricot, pomegranate
Bowl of chitterlings, two bananas, three Hershey bars
Sipping on a "R C" Cola listening to her transistor
Watching the Grand Ole Opry on the tube
Reading the Mad magazine while she sung
"Does your chewing gum lose it's flavor?"

And Ahab walked up to her and he said
[Foreign Content]
Which is Arabic for, "Let's twist again like we did last summer, baby" You know what I mean! Whew!
She looked up at him from off the rug
Give him one of the sly looks
She said, "Crazy crazy crazy cray"
'Round and around and around and around and around and around
And that's the story 'bout Ahab the Arab
The Sheik of the burnin' sand
Ahab the Arab the swinging Sheik of the burnin' sand

@Idgit is too young to remember this stupid but entertaining song. When was that....66 or 67?

It was lost on me. But now I know he was just saying Tony was like Fatima on her zebra skin rug, so that's all clear as mud. :)

Most of us understand the majority of the defense did not play, so this game is a small sample size of a configuration that will not be present on opening day.

That is true, but some of these guys that did play will be counted on as rotational players, and the ones on the DL didn't look very good.

Sorry guys, my simple thought patterns were around back when they played Country Western on 75, like Mary Robbins: Cool Water.
