Tony Romo looked awful. In accurate throws. held the ball way too long rather than throwing it away. roll out and chuck it oob, tony. He was slow on his reads and was still making the same mistake of missing underneath coverage up the hash and throwing picks. I have never seen him throw into that much double coverage before. Garrett having to save Tony from a delay of game puts the last several years in a bit of perspective. The reason why we are constantly deep in the snap count is Tony. Linehan and Tony need to get this figured out.

SF did a good job taking away the TE in the middle of the field. Tony still tried to force some throws especially to Witten. Cannot help but be disappointed in the performance of both these guys. Will look very closesly this week when I revisist the game.

Dez still has his head up his butt. He needs to quit ranting and start saving it for the field. He was worthless in the second half. Harris deserves a second contract moreso than Dez to this point. Very disappointing.

Fred was the best player on offense. Demarco was good but that fumble set the tone for a long afternoon.

Oline as a whole looked good. Romo most times had lots of time to throw. He would go through reads find nothing and then cower expecting pressure that never came. A lot of the pressure was from Romo holding the ball. We were able to run between the tackles. Over the edges and where we wanted. Saw Martin grabbing his foot on the TD run though. Plantar fasicitis looks like it could be a lingering issue.

Although they are the same size or thereabouts, I find myself more confident in Beasley's ability to stay healthy than I do Dunbars especially under a heavy workload. Seemed to prove himself a bit in that regard to my mind.

SF has better coached coverage unit than ours. Wilcox was awful. Kept letting things get behind him or overrunning things and missing tackles. In the first half the depth on our drops was off and completions kept on happening in front of guys. That cleaned up in the second half but you still see a lot of uncertainty as guys react to routes as they get to their drops. Durant, Wilcox, Carr, and Claiborne were particularly noticeable in this regard.

The LB played up and down. McClain looked locked in and physical. Carter was all over the place. All three did a good job swarming the ball. Durant struggled in coverage. Should provide some levity regarding Carter's past performances. It's not as easy as some fans seem to think it is. Has been mentioned several times before this but Lee in place of Durant would be a superb LB corps.

DT play seemed very good. All 4 guys were active and for the majority of the game held the poa. Ran over the edges especially 95 who looked pretty medicore. Looking forward to the coaches film to really get a good look. I was paying attention to coverage most of the game.

Mincey should have opened some people's eyes. That was Staley he was doing some of that to. Good pressure from 92 all game long.

All in all, the defense was encouraging. Held SF scoreless in the second half and kept on giving the offense opportunities that they could not capitalize on. Overall, I think the team can be very competitive. S remains a bugaboo

This division is still wide open. Commanders are awful. Eagles looked pretty bad for 2.5 quarters versus a depleted Jags team. The Giants are weak up front on both sides of the ball.

Overall, we looked a lot like 8-8 to me. Would that be enough this year?

I'll admit that I have been very critical of Jeremy Mincey, but he was one out of only a handful of people that showed up to this game. He earned a lot of respect from me after this game.

The only reason we are consistently an 8-8 team is we have 2 or 3 games every year that we cannot explain. This game was one of them.

I am worried about Romo's back honestly. He was not on target AT ALL.

I said all 4 DT were active. He got love with the rest. His best play was running down the field on a pass underneath to make a key tackle. He didn't get blown off the ball but I didn't notice him outside of that. Did you notice any outstanding play outside of that from him?

I was watching our guys go into their drops for the most part after looking at the formations. I may have missed something.

I took a lot of flack for being concerned about Romo's back during training camp when he was missing all that time.

The deep balls that were lobs are not a good sign. His lack of fundamentals at times is not a good sign.

The opener being one of those "2 or 3 games that we can't explain" is not a good sign.

I would throw out the defense's tape in the second half because of the score and how conservative SF was.

They went to 11 personnel and we countered with a whole lot of nickel. They spread it out and tried to run on us and couldn't.

The pass defense especially on third down was better. No more blown coverages from the Wilcox trio and they allowed SF into FG range but once. The pass rush was pretty good all game long. It continued in the second half and forced some bad throws and got some sacks when our coverage held up for a few seconds as opposed to what we saw in the first half.

Pass rush was solid, because of Kapernicks mobility he dodged about 3 sacks.

What about Crawford? He's one of our few high drafted DL and got a lot of praise in the offseason. I honestly have never heard or seen anything encouraging from him.

He was the one who hit Kap on the play that Durant somehow dropped the INT. That was actually pretty impressive.

Other than that I don't remember seeing his number too much.

I'm not trying to be obtuse here, but with that big of a lead and turnovers generated the offense wasn't really pressing to score points. Lack of deep shots, and just trying to put together drives that would eat up clock.

Also I've seen a trend in NFL offenses trying to run out 11 personnel across the league, and making it a "base offense" to run out of.

My point is, I wouldn't put a whole lot of emphasis on good/bad they were in the second half with that kind of lead.

I am waiting for the all 22 then I will revisit the DL. I was watching Wilcox and the will on defense for the most part on the first watch.

The defensive line surprised me. They held up against the run decently, and got pressure and some hard hits on the qb. Beasley is a tough little bugger. He got smoked and got up like it was nothing. I look forward to reading more of your analysis.

He still got pushed back 4 yards when they double team him on run plays. He did do better against the single blocks and rushing the passer. Better than what I can remember him playing from last year.

I bet you wouldn't have thrown it out if they'd run the score up some more, though. That's a no-win for the defense.

They can only defend the plays the offense chose to run against them. Give credit where it's due. If they get run up in the second half next week, nobody will be giving them a mulligan, I can pretty much assure you.

Why would you throw it out in the event the opposition was running it up?

The idea hinges on whether or not you can stop an offense who is trying. For the 49ers, throw out the 2nd half today because the 49ers didn't need to score. At least that's what seems to be the claim.

Maybe the defense shut em down, maybe the 9ers coasted. To be determined.

If the score is being ran up, clearly you can't stop them regardless of whether or not they are even trying to score. Nothing to be determined. You do in fact suck.

My biggest issue with Romo, and I say this as someone who has always been a big supporter of his, is his inability at times to give up on a play. If he could just be drilled into realizing that throwing the ball away is a good play I think his whole career and the way he is viewed by the majority of people would be completely different. He has an arrogance to his playing style however that just will not allow him do it voluntarily.
