Assistant Updates

According to an NFL source, Cowboy assistant coaches Jason Garrett and Tony Sparano won't interview with the Falcons until later in the week. That probably means Friday. The Cowboys are scheduled to have regular practices on Wednesday and Thursday, and may have a long weekend off.

As for Cowboys director of scouting Jeff Ireland and is likely departure to the Dolphins as their new general manager, it's likely there will be some negotiating that will take place. Ireland is in Miami today to talk to new Dolphins' football boss, Bill Parcells.

If the Dolphins don't want to wait until after the 2008 draft to have Ireland in place, expect them to give the Cowboys some kind of compensation in return. Don't be shocked if it's a low-round draft pick. Either way, Ireland is likely gone it's just a matter of when.

GARRETT IN DEMAND

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is the hot candidate thus far in the two cities that are looking for new coaches.

Per Schefter, both the Falcons and the Ravens have requested permission to interview Garrett.

Under league rules, assistant coaches from teams with playoff byes are permitted to interview for head-coaching jobs during the bye week.

It's not presently known whether Garrett will interview for either position. He also could be a candidate in Miami, where Fins football poobah Bill Parcells has yet to decide whether to keep coach Cam Cameron. Garrett, a first-year coordinator, was a member of Nick Saban's staff in Miami.

I got this off a site on the Phininsider,so i'm just putting this out there.

Ireland's interview might be a formality. One person within the Dolphins organization who requested anonymity said that based on conversations he has had with insiders around the league, Parcells plans to hire Ireland.

"I heard it's a done deal," the source told The Post.

Parcells, who was not available to comment Monday, is said to be quite fond of Ireland's work. The feeling apparently is mutual.

Also, it's very clear that Ireland wants this gig in Miami. Here is some of what he has been saying, courtesy of the Post:
"There was a fist pump there. I was excited."

"If I'm chosen to be there and to work with Bill, anybody in their right mind would jump at such a major opportunity. I've been reading about this for the past week and a half. To have something finally come to fruition gets you excited."

"I'm ecstatic to be even considered for the position. The Dolphins are a great and proud franchise. They've just had a little bad luck."

"I consider the work I did with Bill outstanding years. We communicate well together and work well together. I think it would work out well for me, and I'm confident it would work out well for the Dolphins."

I just don't get why Jerry isn't putting up more of a fight for Ireland......Maybe there is something going on behind the sceens than meets the eye, but it sure seems JJ isn't that broken up about losing his top personel guy to his former coach in a role that is very similar to his current one (GM title or not).

there's really not much Jerry can do here, Ireland will be getting more of a role in Miami than he will have here

Seems Ireland really has no desire to stay in Dallas.....

If he hasn't, he could sit down with Irleand, give him some additional responsibility, provide a timeline/succession plan for when Stephen would take over and he'd be GM. In the meantime, Ireland could consult with Jones on all GM matters, not just personel, wit JJ obviously having final say.

And finally, he certainly could give Ireland a handsome raise. Its not like GM's break the bank. And let's face it, being able to avoid the next L. Davis signing would make any good personel guy pay for himself.

I'm not sure it's that he has no desire to stay, i think it's just that he is excited at the prospect of being a full-on GM of an organization, with the responsibility that goes along with it.

we all know that as long as Jerry is here that he will always be the GM, so Ireland would pretty much be stuck where he is as long as he stayed.

it's not that simple, Ireland would have to be named the GM, and would have to have the final say, which won't happen as long as Jerry is owner and de facto GM

I would be very happy if I were a Dolphin fan and that they get Ireland to be the GM

they would have Parcells as overseer, not coach, and him and Ireland will build a nice roster for them, they get a young, energetic, brilliant coach in Garrett, and they'll be something in 2/3 years

sucks that it could come at the expense of us, but hell, I'm getting giddy for them

Jerry needs to fire himself and let Ireland run the show!

I wish.

But I'm sure that's why Ireland was fist pumping when Parcells called. Who wants to be a personnel guy for Jerry?

I'm sure he'll have a shortage of applicants if the job becomes available.

Or maybe the great Jeff Ireland had a bunch of idiots working for him as scouts.

I should have qualified that. I'm sure most wannabe's on here would love the job. And many up and coming guys.

But not many quality personnel guys would want to work for Jerry if they have other opportunities. And any that come would jump, just like Ireland is doing, at their first chance.

Of course, Jerry isn't going to bring in anyone of substance since he's given himself the GM title and tries to run the show. We'll probably just get some in house scout to move up, whoever is left that Parcells and Ireland don't take with them.

Right. Jerry would never hire a genius like Jeff Ireland.

Like I said, I'm sure all of the regional scouts Ireland had working for him were idiots.

That's just life when you're sitting at the top of the conference. Teams raid your pantry.
