Most teams nowadays rise to the top because of moves they make in free agency. And we were limited by the salary cap. That is just the reality of it.

Not true. The core of most teams is and always has been built through the draft.

Of course the 'core' is built through the draft, but what makes a team dominant is free-agency...

I guess the Patriots just have an explosive offense because of some rookie draftee by the name of Randy Moss.. let us not even get into that rookie, Adalius Thomas.. how about Tampa Bay emerging as a play-off threat with their rookies Jeff Garcia and Galloway...

Yes, they were. But that wasn't necessarily because Jimmy wanted him #1 overall.

And I asked you to show me something, anything, that backs up your argument and you still haven't done so.......I'm still waiting.....

I guess you missed the blockbuster Adam Vineterri signing by the Colts 2 years ago. And the Eagles' "cheap" FO didn't exactly get Jon Runyan and Jevon Kearse cheaply in FA either.

Tom Brady had 3 SB rings before Moss ever stepped foot in NE.........If there was ever a team that is the prime example of building through the draft, it's NE. And that list can include Indy, Jacksonville, SD and Pitt, at the very least.

Assistant Updates

According to an NFL source, Cowboy assistant coaches Jason Garrett and Tony Sparano won't interview with the Falcons until later in the week. That probably means Friday. The Cowboys are scheduled to have regular practices on Wednesday and Thursday, and may have a long weekend off.

As for Cowboys director of scouting Jeff Ireland and is likely departure to the Dolphins as their new general manager, it's likely there will be some negotiating that will take place. Ireland is in Miami today to talk to new Dolphins' football boss, Bill Parcells.

If the Dolphins don't want to wait until after the 2008 draft to have Ireland in place, expect them to give the Cowboys some kind of compensation in return. Don't be shocked if it's a low-round draft pick. Either way, Ireland is likely gone it's just a matter of when.

none of these men should be interviewing until our own season has ended IMO

Rodney Harrison? Corey Dillon?

Jacksonville has gotten a number of players via FA, including raiding Indy's roster.

Way to backtrack there. Bottom line is teams are built through the draft.

The whole point is we would've had a chance to keep things together longer in the 90's and also avoided the three 5-11 seasons in the early '00's if we had someone in charge of personnel during the mid to late 90's instead of Jerry and Lacewell.

I didn't miss anything. The core of most NFL teams are built through the draft.

And, what's your obsession with the Eagles?

Back-track??? Notice the words rise to the top. How is that in anyway back-tracking? The Patriots constantly plug-in players through free-agency. They went after Randy Moss, because they lost to the Colts. They also got welker and Stallworth, added Adalius Thomas, and as the other poster pointed out, they got Rodney Harrison and Coery Dillon. They also went out and get experienced veterans like Junior Seau...

I disagree. I think the worst GM move Jerry did was not getting rid of Lacewell after the 1995 draft. Even with signing a bust like Galloway, a great head of personnel and scouting can overcome these dopey moves in one or two drafts. Stepret Williams??????? Remember "Corey Fleming caught a pass!!!!! Corey Fleming caught a pass!!!!!" C'mon!!!! Those were Lacewell guys.

lol. I have to agree there.
I really hated Lacewell's drafts but Jerry's desire to give away first round picks made his job even harder.

Yea, I know, just do not tell T.O, Leonard Davis, Ken Hamlin or Tony Romo that:) That's only 4 Pro Bowlers:)

Drafting is key to an organization but so is cap management, free agent acquisitions and coaching. There is no one thing that makes it all work. The Redstinks are the worst drafting team in history but have made a few more playoffs than say the Cleveland Browns. Mainly because the Redstinks have spent in free agency.
