Cowboys' new strength coach lost out to Deion in first go-round

Wocik was with the Cowboys in the 1990-96 seasons. His firing was thought to be over an incident in which Wocik had a sideline confrontation with Barry Switzer over having Chris Boniol kick a seventh field goal against the Green Bay Packers in a 1996 game that the Cowboys already had won.

(Daryl Johnston claims it was an incident over Deion and that Sander's arrival led to the erosion in the Cowboy's locker room.)

Jeff Pearlman's 2008 book, "Boys Will Be Boys," (HarperCollins) included the incident in which Woick's authority was undermined.
Pearlman wrote:

When Mike Woicik, the team's gruff strength and conditioning coach, complained about Sanders' indifference, Switzer sided with his new star. "We're talking about Deion Sanders here," Switzer told Woicik. "If he doesn't want to do something, he doesn't have to."

Woicik was speechless. Credited by many players as a key to the back-to-back Super Bowls, Woicik was a no-nonsense taskmaster who demanded maximum effort. "For Mike, anything short of a funeral was an unacceptable excuse to miss a session," says Kevin Smith. "Mike had the personality of a lamp, but if you had to bench press he knew exactly how many you were supposed to do." ...

Throughout the locker room, Woicik was as respected as any Cowboy coach or official. And Deion Sanders had the nerve to treat him … like this?

Woicik back then was reported to come off as too abrasive to many players. But to the Troy Aikmans and Daryl Johnstons, he was a critical component to success.

simply the worst cowboy ever.

and to think this is the example jerry cites everytime he signs an owens or a pacman or underwood.

OMG! A HoF player was mean to the conditioning coach. That's not on Deion, it is on Switzer. Players will get away with whatever the HC lets them

I couldn't agree more.

Interesting read. After 15 years, our franchise finally seems to be going in the right direction.

Whatever.

The guy dominated at the corner position. And was a phenomenal returner.

The issue was Switzer and that Switzer was untouchable with Jerry Jones...and still is.

Worst Cowboy ever...gimme a break.

Oh yeah, Deion also played offense as well. I remember one game where he had something ridiculous like 110 downs in one game. Most players would do that for 1 game and never evne attempt it again.

no, its not on the HC but on the "real boss" of the cowboys

one guess allowed

this is not a trick question, it is the guy who is always saying that he is the boss ;)

Not surprised by Moose's comments although I've never heard him say anything like this before re Deion.

I certainly believe it because of problems Sanders got into with Aikman. Sanders allegedly spread rumors that Aikman was a racist because he didn't throw to his black WRs as much as to the white guys. Aikman was furious and got into Sanders face; Sanders denied it but this was only incident between Aikman & Sanders. Rumors also started spreading (Aikman again believed Sanders was the spreader) that Aikman was guy. In fact the story I read by another Cowboy stated Aikman and Switzer weren't even speaking because Aikman upset with Switzer's lack of focus, team discipline, etc. Switerzer so concerned he was afraid Aikman would complain to Jerr & knew Aikman had the credits to get him fired. The closest Cowboy position coach to Switzer was allegedly behind at least the gay rumor. Jerry forced Switzer to fire the guy but Switzer got the guy the either a coaching job or HC job at Oklahoma.

Sanders continued to undermine Aikman's position on the team in the lockerroom blaming him for the Cowboys poor play in 1997 & behind. Eventually Irvin & maybe even Woodsen got into Sanders face & told him to shut his mouth, etc.

This I agree with.

For those with the 'worst Cowboy ever', ask yourself these questions.

1. Do we win a Super Bowl with Switzer, but without Deion?

2. Does the team remain disciplined with Switzer, but no Deion?

John Blake was the guy you're thinking of.

He also was mostly responsible for the "racism" nonsense.

Was Deion Sanders a fool, or was he a stain on this organization that just won't wash out? Both.

A disappointing example of players achieving a level of self-indulgence that contributed to a lesser team.

On the bright side, it looks to be a wrong that Jason Garrett is looking to right.

That's got to be a good thing.

I expected nothing less when Switzer arrived. I told anyone who would listen that he was going to have success up front with Jimmy's players and then he was going to drive this team into Dante's Inferno with a slow descent into hell.

Barry was a cancer.

The Anti-Jimmy!

:banghead:

Blame Barry all you want, but does anyone seriously think Jerry was going to pay all that money for his ultimate pet signing and then let a coach push him around? No way.

And theebs was exactly right about what an impression Deion made on Jerry. He loves to cite Deion and the story about Stephen confronting him about it more than anything. You can bet that the Deion "success" had a big hand in the Galloway and Roy Williams trades years later.

I have said this many times. If it meant never having deion a part of this organization I would give back the super bowl.

Yes, thats right thats what I said.

The man changed everything around here, all for the worse.

oh and if you have ever read anything I have posted here I wont even need to give my thoughts on switzer. Its pretty evident.

I wish Deion would have never tarnished the Cowboys star. He should have stayed in Atlanta or SF.

It's a shame that trash like that will be in the HoF now.
