I don't think it's a shot at either guy, rather just a credit to Greg Ellis. We have brought in two first round guys to replace him and he's worked very hard at learning a new position and has been able to beat them both out. Kudos to Greg for that.

I don't think he took a shot at Spencer, but Spencer better be ready for camp this year, after his rookie season he has been kind of a disappointment. He needs to be able to stay healthy and get it done. We are going to need him to help out the pass rush, cause everyone knows teams will game plan to take away Ware next season.

Dallas really needed to sign some winners on the defensive side of the ball at some point.

What has Ware learned from Ellis?

The art of the almost-sack?

How to be mediocre for a decade?

How to not excel in the Mike Zimmer defense?

How to flirt with being a pretty good player?

How to not win Super Bowls? (edit: Playoff game)

How to whine about your role to the media?

How to cry about your contract to anyone who'll listen?

It's no wonder this team closes up shop every December.

What a mindnumbingly stupid post. If the best defensive player in the NFL says he learned something from someone, I hesitate to wonder why you think he shouldn't be granted a bit of credibility.

But, of course, I'm sure you're a better evaluator of pass rushing talent than Ware, so I withdraw my complaint.

No doubt.

Last I checked a youngster wins a position battle if he is even with the vet but right now who has been even with Greg?

Players respect performance and Greg has performed. Ware is just pointing that out.

Eh...I think if they're even (or if the younger player looks slightly better), most coaches would give the edge to the veteran to start.

Norm is talking about how the draft picks fit in and how it affects players already on the roster. Starting off with Greg Ellis.

Don't suppose you can post some of his observations in a separate thread. Would appreciate it.

I'm terrible at paraphrasing off the radio. He didn't really add much insight. He still feels Ellis is needed until his contract runs out and they find out who can play.

Where's your answer to the questions? Oh, that's right, you can't.

How would Ware know what good veteran leadership is? He's never had any. Except Ellis, who I think is far more of a negative presence than TO ever was.

Ellis personifies what's wrong with this team. He's the biggest weak sister in the lockerroom. He's a slightly above average player who thinks he deserves superstar treatment. Anyone who doesn't see that has their silver and blue-colored glasses on.

You asked closed-ended questions, friend. An open-ended question to what Ellis taught? How about nearly every single pass-rush move that Ware utilizes now? How about the balance that he taught Spencer? How about the lessons about transitioning to OLB that he taught Spencer?

He may not be a tremendous player, but again, considering that you hear probably 1/10,000 of the conversations Ellis has with his teammates, I would tend toward the belief of someone who would have actual evidence of his leadership. Ellis has been reasonably successful because he has decidedly above average technique, but he is physically inferior to both Spencer and Ware, and aging sufficiently that his technique is no longer enough to sustain him.

He taught Ware how to not win a playoff game? Come on, do you really think that wasn't a disingenuous, ridiculous kind of pseudo-question to ask?

I may not have heard lockerroom conversations, but I don't have to. I've heard plenty of what Ellis has said publicly. It should make a Cowboy fan cringe to think what the malcontent says in private.

Several teammates took up for TO as well. Just as they will for Ellis after he gets the axe. Ellis - much like TO - is not a leader, but does a good job of winning teammates to his own selfish cause.

Ware Supports Ellis

Linebacker DeMarcus Ware did right by his teammate Greg Ellis today. Not that you'd expect anything less from Ware.
Ware was at a photo shoot today for Venom Energy Drink; he's one of the athletes who is endorsing the energy drink.
Ware was asked about Ellis, who once again appears may be one his way out of town with another round of linebackers being drafted.

"When I first came in he was a mentor to me and all the rookies. I’ve learned a lot from Greg," Ware said. "He’s a guy people leaned on. He’s also a guy that shows and leads by example. And then they brought - I’m not going to call any names - they brought a lot of guys in to take his position and you see how hard he works and nobody has been able to beat him out yet. He’s out there working hard and playing hard. I think he fits in our defense. I hope he’s here to stay."

Will such comments matter? Probably not ... but they're nice comments regardless.

Sad day when no one in their mid-twenties can beat out an old, average, bushy-brow old man.

It always amazes me how players that speak out on issues are thrown under the bus because they are willing to say what no one wants to hear. Yes, he has whined about his salary and job security lately. no more than either one of us would do in our own profession. And if you you out there saying I'm wrong, then I'm willing to bet you are in a dead end job you have been in for a many of years. However, since his arrival in Dallas, he have been the most consistent defensive player on the team until Ware. Yes, he is getting long in the tooth, but his teammate feel he have something left in the tank and can still produce. If anything, Spencer and Carp should be taken offense and stepping up their game. Like stated before, it is a shame neither one have taken advantage of the situation. Not saying that it can not happen, however, not as of yet. What should be looking at Ellis like a TIMEX....Takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Boy, Ellis will never get the credit he deserves.

Let's recap...

Led this team in sacks for God only knows how many seasons-- most of the time he was the ONLY pass-rusher on the roster.

His run defense rarely gets mentioned but he was a very good run stopper-- perhaps a better run-stopper than he was pass-rusher.

Given his value and production, he really did sign a ridiculously low-priced contract given his skill set-- Yeah that's tough noogies for him, but there were many d-lineman with far less production who have signed much bigger contracts than what Greg Ellis did.

He came back from two potentially career-ending injuring. The broken leg was particularly bad. And then you tack on an achilles heel tear! Ouch!

By most accounts he's a very good team-mate, and has taken the time to work with the young guys-- even if it meant he was costing himself playing time by doing so.

Even after he signed his last contract, he went out and did a workman's job... There was no fall-off because he suddenly had a security-- Like what we've seen with other players who cashed in.

And finally, no matter what Ellis says to the media, my guess is that he's that much harder on himself-- "worriers" typically are.

or williams or any of the other linebackers that were brought in that were rumored to be able to play outside

Nice post...

But, unfortunetely, in todays society, with all the kids wanting "it right now", they forget what was.

Boy you're telling me.

I deal in a business where people want to feel better NOW! The word "patience" isn't in their vocabulary.

Patience went out of vogue several years ago...;):)
