Wildcat for Cowboys

The Wildcat likely is coming to the stadium near you. Jerry Jones said the Cowboys could draft a quarterback to use in the Wildcat, a formation made popular by the Miami Dolphins with running back Ronnie Brown taking the snap in the shotgun offense.

"We may want to do some things and our offense this year with a third quarterback," Jones said. "That's something other than be there as a backup to the second quarterback and be there in case you lose all the quarterbacks and be there not certainly as a development prospect, but we could hopefully find a quarterback with a set of skills that we could put some packages in for."

Jones added that third-year receiver Isaiah Stanback, a former quarterback at Washington, also could be used in a Wildcat formation.
The Cowboys have never used the Wildcat formation.

As long as this doesn't make Jones thirst for Pat White in the second round, I am fine with it. It might be nice to get some use out of Stanback.

Crayton could do it too.

The only issue is that I think this fad won't last and the last thing teams need to do is get talent specifically for it. It is fine to dabble in but late in the year, teams figured out how to beat it. It won't be around long IMO.

Pat White in Cowboys' plans?

Pat White, the West Virginia quarterback, has been one of the more intriguing draft prospects because of his versatility. He showed at the Combine he could be a quarterback in the NFL but teams are also interested in seeing him as a wide receiver.

With the popularity of the Wildcat formation growing, White's status has improved, and Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones sounded as if he might take a chance on a third quarterback with White's type of skills.

"We may want to do some things in our offense this year with a third quarterback," Jones said. "That's something other than be there as a backup to the second quarterback and be there in case you lose all the quarterbacks ... We could hopefully find a quarterback with a set of skills that we could put some packages in for."

Jones said he would not rule out that kind of move with Isaiah Stanback, who played quarterback at Washington before the Cowboys moved him to receiver in 2007. His development has been slow because of injuries (foot, shoulder) his first two years.

"But I want to be careful about taking away time from Stanback on his potential development as a receiver," Jones said.

Oh please don't let Jones get all hot and bothered for this player like he did with Quincy Carter. I don't think I can take that again.

You could not ask for a better quality person than Pat White. Really is a class act guy. But I think the 2nd round would be too high for him.

Love the kid.

Please, no more running QBs. You want to use Stanback for this? Ok, don't waste a draft pick drafting the next Michael Vick / Vince Young / Kordell Stewart / Quincy Carter / Randall Cunningham / etc / etc /etc. They NEVER turn out to be great QBs.

If you want a one trick pony, just pick the fastest man in the draft.

What a foolish Idea.

Using the wildcat is fine if you have the people in house to do this already.

Drafting people to do this is ridiculous and a waste of time. If I am romo and I come off the field for this, well I am not going to be happy.

and ultimately, if you are so interested in this why not keep the coaches here who created it, you know the ones that were already here and employed with the team instead of getting rid of everyone?

As usual we are a year behind.

Any team that reaches for players to play in this fad formation will regret it.

That said, pencil Pat White in.

This is pure smokescreen.

Even if the team wanted to do this, which I seriously doubt, you wouldn't come out and announce it to the world this way. Not even Jerry does that.

And if RJ wouldn't run the wildcat last year when Brad Johnson was singlehandedly killing us and we already had Stanback on the roster, I don't see us doing it next year.

The WR from Penn State, D Williams (I think) also could play that role. I think he did some of it while at Penn State.
