CB Pacman Jones might be a little less worried about staging a PR campaign today, if he caught wind of anything that commissioner Roger Goodell told the media or the masses at the SMU Athletic Forum.
Goodell has been happy to hear what Jones has had to say over the last few weeks, while also assuredly adding that his actions are more important than his words.
"I'm encouraged by some of the things I'm hearing but I will meet with him before training camp starts to gage personally some of things he's doing," Goodell told us. "I will keep in touch with our people that are monitoring his progress."
There was no certain word on reinstatement. But the buzz phrase we kept hearing on that was "before the start of training camp." Translation: Don't hold your breath on it happening anytime soon.
"One of the issues I rose with Adam was I want to see a sustained period of time where he conducts himself the way an NFL player should conduct himself," the commish said. "That's why I gave him the opportunity to participate with the Titans immediately after the season. He had a hiccup. He had some thing that I didn't think reflect well on the league or himself, so I took that right away from him. At some point, I may reconsider that."
That "hiccup" came when Jones was accused of hitting a woman at an Atlanta strip club three months ago. Before the incident, the commissioner had granted Jones access to work out at the club's facility.
Jones is back to square one on that. Even if he's traded to Dallas, there's no guarantee he'll be able to join the team in any capacity before his reinstatement.
"He made a mistake, we met with him again, he understands that," Goodell said. "Like I say, I'm encouraged by some of the things he's doing. I'll continually keep up to speed on what's happening and I'll review it at the appropriate time."
Goodell also said that there was no need for Jones to "apply for reinstatement", and that he was unaware of the embattled corner's plans to do so.
So when asked about the "decision" by Pacman to not apply on Tuesday, the commissioner said he had no reaction. During his speech to the SMU people, he also was sympathetic to conditions under which Pacman grew up, conditions he said -- because of his own upbringing -- he couldn't full understand.
But in the end, he reiterated that there is no excuse for Jones' actions. And until Pacman demonstrates he can keep from repeating his mistakes, he may have a tough road to hoe in getting back into the NFL.
"He was told he was going to have to conduct himself in a more positive fashion, he was going to have to take responisibility for his actions," Goodell said. "And he seemed to indicate that on the Michael Irvin radio show
