I think that failing the exit physical after the season is the real issue here.

I'm not an expert by any means but I think failing the exit physical would probably activate some clause protecting players in the collective bargaining agreement.

JJ is going to have to pay Glenn one way or another, either with an injury settlement or through his contract.

If Glenn retires due to injury then yes you are correct Dallas would have to offer a settlement. However, Dallas would be eligible for some money back from Glenn if he retires early so the settlement may very well be close to that 500K mark.

And to get to that point Glenn would have to retire which he does not seem to want to do.

So he will try to get that 500K offer up to say 750K then he'll sign it imho.

Glenn was paid a lot of money last year for zero production. I feel he owes Jerry not the other way around. No team will sign him as he can't pass a physical. SIGN THE DAMN PAPER OR HIT THE BRICKS.

:starspin I feel the same way. Glenn got a lot of money last year and didn't contribute. I seriously doubt that anyone will want him at this point in his career due to his injury background. I would hate to see us hold a roster spot open for Glenn and then see one of our players go elsewhere and be successful. Even if Glenn were to be able to come back and play, how long would the knee hold up? Not that long, IMO. It's time to cut our losses with Glenn and let some other player have his roster spot.

Once Terry Glenn does this (if he does) what precedent does it set for all future contracts? Does it set a precedent? How will the NFLPA react?

I can see where every team would want waivers like this.

Does this regularly happen and I'm just unaware of it?

I think the only reason they are even 'allowed' to do this is because he can't even pass the team physical.

The Cowboys could cut Glenn today and not pay him another dime. They wouldn't need to pay him an injury settlement because his injury is from last year.

If they let him participate in OTAs or minicamps and he got hurt again, then he'd have to be paid his full salary. That's why the Cowboys want him to sign the split contract -- if it's the same old injury recurring, he gets only $500,000 (which is more than nothing), but if it's an injury to another part of his body, he gets his full salary like normal.

Adam how would an unsigned rookie be compensated for an injury?

Thanks, Kent

He had two 1000 yard seasons with the Cowboys. In 2006, he played 6 games and got 400 yards. He had only 752 yards in 2003. What exactly does Dallas owe this guy, especially after paying him 5 million last year for nothing? 5 out of the 11 years he has played, he hasn't played over 10 games. Only 4 seasons, he has broken 1000 yards.

What exactly do we owe him? Why all the sentiments?

COnsidering this is the worst injury he has ever had and his historoy with injuries overall, just cut your losses.

He isn't even a luxury anymore as far as I can tell.

The rookies sign an injury protection that stipulates what type of contract they'll get if they're injured during football-related team activities before they sign their contract. Generally, it says they'll get the same contract they would have gotten (based on their draft slotting) if they hadn't been injured.

AdamJT13,

You are right about the call. I was wrong. Dallas was in quarters or cover-4. I was wrong, and I apologize for making an honest mistake about the coverage. If you don't know the call, the average fan, you can easily confuse cover-2 and cover-4, just like you could confuse cover-1 with cover -3. It doesn't help that the guys on TV don't show or point these things out, and some good sources said Dallas was in cover-2. Plus, even the quarterbacks get confused when teams show one thing and roll into another coverage.

I actually think the second Moss TD is your best defense when you make your case for quarters being the call. I analyzed the 49er play when Dallas was in quarters, and the corners were pressing in man.

However, on the second Moss TD, the way the corners are playing off and sinking deep tells you it was cover 4, even though the underneath coverage looks like cover 2 and pre-snap looks like cover-2. In cover-2, the corners will press more, and Dallas' corners did this in cover -2 for sure. Yet, in cover-2, they can play off, too.

Watch Glenn on the second TD, he is so concerned about keeping Moss away from the sidelines or possibly running the corner route Moss talked about, he gives too much lateral space and really allows Moss to run right at Roy and his area uncontested. Moreover, Glenn is sinking into his fourth or deep quarater, and Moss takes advantage of the coverage and runs right at Roy's quarter. Dallas was outcoached here. Also, watch Henry. He is playing off and sinking back with the crossing inside receiver. That is a tip off to cover-4. Both Glenn and Henry tip cover-4 off after the snap. It was a four deep/prevent, and it didn't work.

I do see the 4 deep zone on that play now. It is kind of like that picture of the lady and the vase. You know the black and white one. When the light comes on you can see the old, ugly woman and the pretty one, too.

You already explained this, but I am little hard headed sometimes. We disagree on the first one, but the call to play cover 4 on the second one was terrible, especially after the first one. Roy was pretty much hung out to dry on the second one. The coaches should have had him at least 15 yards deep. He was about 11.5 yards deep. Plus, Newman should have been put on Moss and Glenn underneath. Parcells put Newman on Moss in 2006, the first game, and Newman shut him down.

Moss has killed Dallas, and Phillips would be wise to put Newman on him this year. Everytime Newman hasn't been on Moss, he has killed Dallas. He was only stopped one time, and that was in the 2006 game in Dallas.

I hope Roy has a great year, and I will not be giving you anymore grief about #38.

Yeah, I'm surprised that this angle isn't discussed more. It seems like a really bad precedent from the NFLPA's point of view, and I wonder if the league would view the contract as an attempt to circumvent salary cap rules.

To me, this is a case of the Cowboys trying to do Glenn a favor, but it still looks like trying to circumvent the rules. The $500K split contract wouldn't even meet the veteran minimum, and I could see an issue being made because of it.

Jerry's trying to have his cake and eat it too. I admire the creativity, and I'll be curious to see the outcome.

If Glenn plays four games at $110K a game makes $440K then gets hurt, does Jerry owe him $500K or $60k? If he plays eight games makes $880K, does he get $500K or nada? Love talking about other peoples money.

The fact he is being offered a contract means something positive. Obviously they think he has a decent chance of actually making it thru the season. O/W they aren't wasting their time, money and most importantly at those prices a roster spot. Not saying the money means nothing just the roster spot means more.

I keep saying it but no one can say he's washed up. As WG pointed out they are going to try and get him to camp and if he can make it thru camp without too much trouble with the knee then they will play him. If he can't make it thru camp (and they'll still protect him a lot) then he's thru.

It's a no-brainer. Is Dallas better off with TG or not? And that assumes he can play at least 3/4s of the games and the playoffs. Doesn't matter if another WR or three shows up big in TC and preseason games or not.

It went up even though he posted it in the wrong thread, which is saying something. :)

In any event, that was a good post 41gy, and not because I try to support Roy Williams. You support your positions and then can back down if you get enough evidence to prove you wrong. That's exactly how it's supposed to work.

If he's on the roster for the opener, he gets the entire $1.7MM.
