“I think, at times, they did OK,” Garrett said. “I thought in general San Diego was able to move the ball too easily on us. They ran the ball on us. They threw the ball very effectively. I do think a couple of penalties we had helped their drives. So we have to address that as well. Playing different combinations of guys, but we’ll get a chance to evaluate them individually. But for the most part we didn’t make enough stops on defense. We’ll go back and look at that and hopefully improve.”

Marinelli had a smile on his face in the postgame locker room, and while he said he’s looking forward to watching the tape and getting back to work, he refused to sugar coat a dreadful performance. “We got to tackle better; I know that,” Marinelli said. “We have to tackle better.”

Marinelli said the defensive line didn’t get off blocks in the run game. Garrett agreed that the gap control was a problem but he added that the Cowboys didn’t get off blocks on any level of the defense.

“I think in general gap control wasn’t where it needed to be,” Garrett said. “I don’t think we got off of blocks well enough at any level, the defensive line level, the linebacker level, and I don’t think we tackled very consistently throughout the game. That’s whatever group was out there. So, great opportunities for us as coaches to go back and point that stuff out, continue to work on the technique of that in practice.”

"Hopefully" improve?

Red: Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.

Andy Dufresne: [in letter to Red] Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

Red: [narrating] I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.

I don't know why Garrett or Marinelli should be the least bit concerned. It's not like we had our starters in there or something. It'll all get better once the season starts and we turn the switch on. Until then, they should just be happy we came out the game relatively unscathed injury wise.

5/11 starters on defense were missing and they were all part of the front 7 group. When they come back they may or may not make much of a difference. Run the ball Garrett, run the ball.

Gap control was a major problem last year too,i think its partly the scheme.

I'm starting to think the same way. Hey, it's all great and good and stuff that you want your "rushmen" to get after the passer. But doing so at the expense of getting completely gouged in the run game isn't the answer.

And all these comments about having Crawford moving into DT when he should be focusing on DE. Saying Mincey could be effective at DT when he isn't even effective at DE. Playing Rayford at DT and some of the new DEs at DT.

I know he wants speed guys that can get penetration. But speed guys aren't especially suited to take on 320lb guards and double teams all game. There is also a question about how these smaller type players can hold up, not only during a game, but all season. I get the feeling that Crawford is NOT on board with all the moving around. And I'm sure he's not the only one.

LOL as a coach you should ALWAYS be concerned. Your job is on the line all the time, anytime. If your not a concerned coach it means you have protection from being fired by the owner. If its one coach in the NFL right now that has to be concerned its Garrett. Oh wait............. Garrett, has life time employment as coach? No that can't be!

the first preseason is not a game that tells a story about a offense or an defense.
That first game is to train the team to line up correctly and try to run some plays, that's all.

The BIG news is no major injuries occurred. Period. Pointe Blanc.

I'm not willing to analyze nuthing until the first half of the last preseason game. And even then, it will be a dress rehearsal.

These guys are going to get significant snaps throughout the season. Did you see the guys we had playing last year? That is the reason for concern, this is our depth. Marinelli wants a rotation of players.

agree with everything, the problem is compounded by our very Average LB corps with Lee out, they just cant get off blocks at all.
