Red: Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.

Andy Dufresne: [in letter to Red] Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

Red: [narrating] I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.

Sometimes at the end of the day, Talent matters.

In this scheme, especially.

There is very little that is disguised. It is very easy to read and pick apart.

It is a system that basically needs supreme talent at a certain number of key positions and that offsets the systemic weakness, which is the simplicity.

Our problem is we are doing it backwards. We should never have transitioned to the scheme without the commitment to get the talent for it.

I don't know who to lay more blame on for the decision. You expect JJ to make a horrible personnel decision. However, Garrett being the 'football' guy and lead authority on the team absolutely should have known better than to OK switching defenses without the personnel. Like they say, 'who's the more foolish? The fool, or the fool who follows him?'

Garrett played a fundamental role in letting this disastrous transition happen by not stopping JJ from himself

The overreaction to the first preseason game of the year played by a defense minus 5 starters and the rest only playing for a series, is predictable but laughable.

It was preseason for San Diego also. You guys act like we played Lombardi's Packers last night

We played a team that had just one more win than us last year and they didn't even have an incompletion until the 4th quarter

And their starters played one series before their bench scrubs dominated us. So please spare me the "it is just preseason" speech

The defense, fully-loaded, was inept. I suppose the hope was, the twos and threes might show us something... anything. The most optimistic of us would have been happy with even a speck of resistance.

I think we all understand the bulk of our starting defense was looking on from the sideline last night, but that is not unique to this team, and for the love of God, let's stop pretending we are resting Bob Lilly and Harvey Martin over there.

Many of those kids will be on the opening roster and may serve as depth here. Believe it or not, some will start soon enough. So yeah, not all of them will be driving beer trucks in a month. I think it's proper to expect something more from a number of defenders who will likely see considerable snaps here this season. To pass off another shoddy performance as a throwaway seems reckless to me.

At this point, I would take anything resembling talent on that side of the ball. On a unit that is just about as lacking in playmakers as it is in structure, this defense is the closest thing to a layup as any offensive coordinator could imagine.

5/11 starters are always missing

This. That excuse only works when its abnormal to be missing that many starters. At this point, we should consider a good performance with all starters present to be the outlier.

Just draft all Cowboys offense in your FF league people. They'll have to put up 40 a game if we want to sniff the playoffs this season (if Romo is healthy that might well be possible).
