Anonymous sources are still verified by editors or other people in charge of the writers, no?
Typically the editor can/will verify the source. Recall that Ben Bradlee of the Washington Post was the only one aside from Woodward and Bernstein who knew the identity of "Deep Throat." The editor is responsible, ultimately, for everything in the newspaper.
The fact is, anyhow, the Cowboys organization has not acted in any way as if they think these articles are untrue or these sources "made up." The Cowboys organization does have power. They grant access. Yes, the Cowboys need ESPN, but ESPN needs the Cowboys. Local reporters need the team's cooperation. The team has substantial leverage.
A few players ridiculed some of the reporters, and implied or stated that events were fabricated. But the Cowboys organization has not risen up in any way to support those players' allegations. If you do not think this is significant, you don't have a great deal of experience as a journalist.
Besides, the players themselves have contradicted their own complaints. Werder had no source because nothing happened. Werder's source is a coward. The source shouldn't have been talking. Etcetera.
There is a reason ESPN has used Werder on the Cowboys beat for so many years. Werder has sources. One of those sources, you can be virtually certain, has the last name Jones and pays the bills.
