What does Garrett have to do at the begining of the season to ensure his job? If he starts 0-4 ... he might be headed out the door. 2-2 does he stay? I don't think JJ will accept mediocrity much longer.
Unless there is a situation where the team quits on Garrett then I expect him to be the HC for the season. I think how the team does for the season will determine his fate as it should. Having said that I hope he can get this team over the top, I would much rather win with Garrett than to start over once again.

What is this....a lets hate Garrett Post? Garrett has the Cowboys headed in the right direction...I know we are waiting for camp to start, but this is ridiculous.
It depends if his assistants are stabbing him in the back, or working as a unit. If we go 2-2 and there's finger pointing, he's gone, if we go 0-4 he's gone no matter what. I don't expect to hear the "we're not eliminated" speech from Jerry this year.

You call 8-8 the past 2 seasons the right direction? What exactly have you seen that makes you think he has the team headed in the right direction?
The team quit on Head Coach 'fat-for-nothing' 2.5 seasons ago... and it takes more than a couple of seasons and drafts to rebuild an entire team, including instilling a new philosophy. If I'm not mistaken, there's only 17 players still on the roster from the team that quit on Wade Phillips.
Garrett's working on it.
That's what I see.

Prior to the team quitting on fatso 2 1/2 years ago the Cowboys were coming off 3 consecutive winning seasons making the playoffs twice and had a playoff win. In 2 full seasons under Garrett the team has back to back 8-8 seasons missing the playoffs both years. If that's heading in the right direction then I'm missing something. Like Garrett in 2010 Leslie Frazier also took over as an interim HC in Minn and after an awful 2011 season had the Vikings in the playoffs at 10-6 in 2012.
The Vikings appear to be a team headed in the right direction and they don't even have a QB near the caliber of Tony Romo. Jim Harbaugh took over a 6-10 SF team in 2011 and because of a lockout didn't have the luxury of OTA's or minicamps but still led SF to the NFC title game that season with Alex Smith who had been a bust.
Harbaugh just led SF to the SB last season with a second year QB who took over during the season. How many seasons does Garrett need before we see at least some progress or are you one of those who's seen some progress? Funny how some FANS saw last seasons 8-8 season as being better than the 8-8 season in 2011. As for the 17 players still on the roster from the team that quit on Wade the players who are no longer here like Mike Jenkins are the ones who quit on him.
nice post
however, i am sure you realize that common sense and facts have no place in a discussion on faith and hope

and one could say they were the exception to the rule but in many cases it takes a new HC time. I don't know if Garrett will get it done or not but 3 full years as a HC is what most will get to prove themselfs. I don't want Garrett getting any more or less than what I would give any other HC
It takes time for a new HC if their team doesn't have a QB. Leslie Frazier took over as the interim HC in Minn on a Vikings team that was being led by old man Favre who was on his last legs. That team ended up 6-10 just like the Cowboys team Garrett took over that season. Frazier was forced to use his #1 pick on Ponder in 2011 who Minn struggled mightily with as a rookie especially after Peterson went down. Ponder has yet to develop into a solid starting QB after 2 seasons but the Vikings were still able to show progress last season despite his struggles by making the playoffs. Harbaugh was left with a SF team that also went 6-10 in 2010 and like Frazier he was left with an unstable QB situation.
Harbaugh turned Alex Smith into a viable NFL QB after just one season. In only 2 years Harbaugh has drafted and already developed the teams future QB who just led SF to a SB. Garrett appeared to be in the best position of any of those coaches having one of the most productive QB's in the league as his starting QB. He was left with not only a solid QB but a pro bowl TE and arguably the greatest pass rusher in the game. PLUS he was left with one of the most talented young WR's in the league.
No way should the Cowboys be spinning their wheels the past 2 seasons at 8-8 with the talent Garrett was left with while watching Minn and especially SF progress the way they have. Before Harbaugh took over in SF they hadn't made the playoffs in close to a decade. The Cowboys had much better teams than SF during Wade's tenure as HC and now SF is light years ahead of the Cowboys. Even with a QB change that occurred past the halfway point of last season SF continued to get better. It's amazing the direction both teams have gone since they met in week 2 of the 2011 season. The Cowboy team that was favored and beat SF in week 2 of the 2011 season was better than the team we saw fold against Washington in the season finale last Dec.
