Weeden must have pulled a Danny Almonte.

Just about the only explanation for the organization thinking he's the typical age of a guy who's only had 2 years in the league.

It's not out of the question that Weeden actually retires before Romo.

While I would have preferred a QB instead of Hitchens in the fourth, I can't really fault his logic. Maybe the team just weren't all that high on anyone outside the top guys?

i guess this is a good thread to ask this question. does anyone know if there are any elite QB prospects coming out of the draft in the next couple of years? like whats going to be our plan of attack after romo? i hope its not the same thing that happened after aikman.

So what was all that money they spent on Orton?

Orton was a backup and insurance for the season not to be developed as a starter. Also by spending I was referring to draft picks as well not just money.

Weeden is simply an insurance policy for this year.

I think Weeden is in Dallas to back up Orton in case Tony goes down, or to back up Tony if Orton is traded or just doesn't show up.

Orton did not need to be developed as a starter. Yes he was an insurance policy, but aren't all back ups supposed to be.
Weeden will be the insurance policy to Orton. Then replace Orton most likely. Until they a QB comes to them worthy of drafting [spending a pick]. Hopefully next year. I took spending an monetarily, not as a draft pick. Easy to take it that way.

What I took from this was not so much that Weeden was going to be developed as the QB of the future, but that with Romo still in the fold and expected to be the QB for the foreseeable future they didn't want to draft a young guy and develop him for a couple of years so he could go and be productive for another team.

If he weren't a free look on a player they had a 2nd round grade on a few years back, he probably wouldn't be here at all. Whatever's going on with Orton makes Weeden a really nice piece of insurance to have. We're fortunate to have a young(ish) player with good measurables and starting experience as a third option and not be looking at a starter coming off of back surgery, and quality backup in an existential funk, and a street free agent with baby fingers backing them up. Pending what we seen in the preseason, I'm very comfortable with Weeden as a long-term backup in Dallas if Orton throws himself off a bridge, or whatever.
