News: Garrett speaks on why a QB wasn't drafted

Well, that isn't completely true, which is why he wasn't drafted until the 10th round. If nothing else, the fact that Staubach was going to have to sit out for 4 years raised some question marks regarding rust etc., but also in college he relied a lot on his feet so his ability to settle in as primarily a drop back passer remained to be seen.

I think it was more a question of teams not wanting to wait out his naval commitment.

There's a reason Weeden signed for the minimum and no guaranteed money and it has nothing to do with him being a good prospect.

You were going to say that it's because he is already being paid by Cleveland, right?

I don't understand why it's a big idea to "develop" a guy that might play elsewhere. If the guy is THAT good, extend him to be the next starter or trade him for picks after a couple of years I.E. Flynn, & possibly Mallett and Cousins.

If this front office thinks they will get lucky again and develop some UDFA into a starter they are wrong.

Scout and draft a guy that you want in your system. I think they are afraid of failure in drafting a QB in the first.

Weeden is being developed to be the primary back up.

And the team feels they are a couple years away from having to develop a quarterback to start.

I think the Cowboys missed the boat on Aaron Murray, a missed opportunity that could be costly a few years down the road. I know there will be other QB's coming in, but I just like the kid.

I like him as well but after the trade to move up in the 2nd rd I pretty much knew that Dallas would not be in position to get Murray

I think it was more a question of teams not wanting to wait out his naval commitment.

If everyone KNEW how good Staubach would be I could see the commitment scaring them off from using a 1st or 2nd round pick on him, but scaring them off for more than 9 rounds? Obviously if everyone KNEW Staubach would be as good as he was they would have used a pick higher than Round 10.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying teams didn't like him, but between the 4 years they knew he would be away from the game, the fact that he wasn't a pure drop back passer in college, and another aspect - his production actually dropped off his senior year from his Heisman winning junior year - he wasn't considered the sure thing superstar you may think.

I have nightmares what is going to happen here post Romo. Ideally you luck into one with a draft pick, but seeing how long it has taken this team to fix Safety, Offensive line, etc....we may need to go through a couple of QBs until we find one we can win with.

I wasn't crazy with most of the mid round guys this year, but some were interesting. Not sure any of those guys are plus starters in the NFL, but we need to keep our eyes open. I just hope we are not caught with our pants down when Romo is not longer a very good QB.

Wasn't it just a couple short years ago that we kept a punter, a kicker and a FG kicker on the roster because the guy that kicked-off (Buehler) couldn't kick FG's? And for some reason we can't draft and carry a developmental back-up/3rd QB because we may lose him in a few years but we see the logic in keep 3 kickers? I just don't understand this logic.

Of course all 3 kickers were put to use in every game. A 3rd QB would use a roster spot and not provide any production.

The third kicker was a complete waste of a valuable roster spot and I don't know of another team that carries three kickers. A third or developmental QB would be an investment especially when your starting QB is 34 years old coming off back surgeries in consecutive years.

I happens. I remember the Giants doing it a few years - I can't remember who the kick off specialist was. Anyone, I'm not arguing that the Cowboys shouldn't have found a way to either get a kicker with a stronger leg or a punter who could also handle kickoff duties, I'm just saying it's easier to use a roster spot on someone that will see the field than one who has virtually no chance of seeing the field.

If they develop Weeden beyond his current tools and something happens that forces Romo out, they bought a few years of buffer to try to get their next guy. I don't have a problem calling him a development project as long as they aren't planning to develop him into a long term solution.

Ditto. I really don't think Garrett was saying anything more than that anyway.

It's simple. The FO believes in Romo. If you get JM, he's going to push Romo off the roster and that's not what they want. I hope they made the right choice.

Why are the Cowboys answering questions about QB's?

They have a QB

Right now no one know what JM is going to do, a lot of teams passed on him so this notion he is some sure thing is a joke.
