If Garrett sells the Broncos that he understands all aspects of the position with an emphasis of being more involved in the defense and getting the right defensive coordinator he just may get job. Garrett will come to the interview well prepared and wow their socks off. As opportunistic as he is I am glad to see the red haired ***** go.
Garrett received exceptional position offer and head coach level compensation with the Cowboys. He could have waited one more year to replace Wade, particularly since the earned some of the blame for our inconsistency and dysfunction on the offense.
I know coaching promotion opportunities are limited but it really bothered me that the players were castigated by the media and fans with distracting downtime during the playoff bye week in the 2007-2008 season but Garrett and others could prepare and interview with other teams.
How can that not be a serious distraction and affect your preparation for the playoffs. Garrett is a stand alone offensive coodinator and assistant head coach and was in an elevated position not even a complete year.
That is a serious double standard message you are sending to the players. Unless you are a coach give 110 percent effort and loyalty to the Dallas Cowboys. The same opportunistic coaches don't just lay out X's and Os but impart team work and philosophy to the players. These players can't help but get cynical and it certainly reinforces a me first attitude.
At least Josh McDaniel the young whiz kid OC for the Patriots had the sense to publically state in 2007 that if he would entertain interview offers it would be after the post season.
With the struggles Garrett had on offense this past season, you would think he would commit to redeem himself with the organization that gave him such a great opportunity.
That bothered me, too. Especially with Sparano pretty sure to get the job and take several of our current assistants with him, but with Garrett also. I can't even remember who it was now -- maybe Denny Green's son on The Huddle over the offseason -- but one of the pundits thought having so many of our coaches preparing for interviews and flying around the country instead of preparing for a playoff game was a big distraction for us last year.
But there's no loyalty in this business, so I don't blame Garrett now. Maybe even he realizes that his stock is falling and he'd better get something ASAP or he may never be a head coach in this league. We'll never know, because the rare Garrett interviews I've seen are pure cliche-fests that don't reveal a thing.
Anyway, I'd be shocked if they hired Garrett with other coordinators who have so much better resumes out there. I can't imagine an interview would mean more than on-field results. But who knows with some of these owners.
