Marvin Lewis had 1 winning season his first 6 years as a head coach. His last 7 he has 6 winning seasons, assuming he wins one game more this year.

So is Lewis a bad coach? I am curious as to why in the modern NFL sometimes coaches get maybe 2-3 seasons to prove themselves then get canned, and really why Lewis wasn't fired after 6 seasons.

Would you fire Lewis right now because he never has won a Superbowl?

For 1 Lewis coaches defense and Garrett coaches offense.

2. Dallas uses their resources and spends money. Cincinnati doesn't.

3. Dallas takes football more serious than Cincinnati does.

4.. And this is the biggest difference... Dallas has had an Elite QB.

You could make a million excuses for a guy coaching the Bengals.

You have to go back and look at the talent on those teams as well as the quarterback play. All that said, he may not have been fired but people have called for it more than a couple season in his career and he has spent numerous years on the hot seat. He is also a guy who had great success as a coordinator before he became a head coach. In Dallas, we have a guy who has failed as an OC at two stops and was still promoted to head coach. Then, the team had its most successful season as he had the least amount of influence. You also look at things like how a team wins and loses. I don't think Marvin Lewis is a great head coach, but you will never watch that team and see a lack of effort, particularly on defense. Even in that 4-12 season those guys were absolutely hammering people on defense. He's also had double digit wins three straight seasons, probably four after this season.

Marvin Lewis wasn't hired to win a Super Bowl. He was hired to keep the team competitive. That is where the difference is. I live by a team that runs the FO with the exact attitude, Kansas City. They rarely sign big name FA's, they don't make big endorsement deals, the ownership wants the visibility and revenue that comes from being a NFL team owner. Unless he runs the team in the ground Lewis has a job forever even if he never wins in January.

I don't watch many Bengals games so I may be wrong, but I've seen enough frustrating and questionable things done by Garrett to make me doubt he's the right man for the job. The offense looked bad all year even in the games Romo played. No excuse for that when you have Romo, Dez and a dominant O-line. No excuse for "playing to lose" week after week. No excuse for epic blunders that have become the norm for Dallas for the past 10 years. No excuse for continuing to play bad players and only giving good players a chance when there's an injury. No excuse for the time/game management mistakes we've seen so often. No excuse for the lack of adjustments. No excuse for playing down to the competition every week. Even when we were 12-4 we had way too many close games than we should have.

It's real simple. Cincy is a dump of a franchise and small market, and we are Dallas. Remember America's team, etc. 5 world titles since 1960. We have the best stadium, the best marketing, most recognized logo in Pro sports.

But for some reason our Owner wants to be comfortable, rather then win.

We deserve to have the best coaches in football, yet we hire coaches as if we are the Bengals!

I am not a Garrett hater-- but at some point, someone needs to be held accountable for the product on the field: GM, coaches, and/or players. We all know the GM isn't going anywhere.

The problem is Romo's age puts the team in a bind. If we fire Garrett and bring in a new system, it will probably take a couple years for Romo to get proficient in it. Honestly, the best choice at this point is to probably do what is most comfortable for Romo. He's our best chance to win and his window is closing quickly. He has 2-3 years left max (and that's IF he stays healthy)-- so keeping him in this system makes some sense.

However, I'd make some big changes in personnel. We need serious help at CB, S, DT, and LBer. We also need depth at WR, and a young stud at RB. I'd grab a capable vet backup QB and draft Romo's replacement this year and start grooming him.

It's not a good one either.

Right. What other team in the NFL would have kept Lewis as a HC? Its one of the biggest mysteries in the world of sports as to why Marvin Lewis still has a job as HC of the Bengals. Other than thinking he has some photos of the owner that arent suitable for public viewing its hard to imagine any scenario that makes sense as to why he's had that job for so many years.

And if anybody is pointing to the Cincy situation as some kinda supportive example for keeping Garrett, . . . . . . . . . . . there are no words

I mean have we come to expect so little as fans of Americas Team?

Thats a pitiful way to own and run a franchise IMO.

I am speechless that some want to use the freaking Bengals as a road map of how to run a franchise.

Its a sad state of affairs isnt it?

Ive lived thru the 70's and 90's so my standards will ALWAYS be higher than anything the Bengals stand for or represent!

You and others want to compare the 70s Bengals to the 70s Cowboys, fine but I am talking about 2005 onward. The Bengals played in a tough division with the Ravens and Steelers, you and everyone else know that.
