Gathers is an absolute Beast and smooth as Silk

With the exception of the catch/fumble at :31, here are all of Rico's plays from last preseason. Let's not act like none of this happened.

Not sure who that is at :31 but he needs to hold onto the ball!

It was Noah Brown #85 who fumbled the ball, but Rico was the one who came diving in and recovered that fumble. Two plays later, Rico caught the game-tying TD.

I don't understand how this staff can't find 8 plays for him to learn to perfection and use him in the red zone only. He can be taught to block in theses 8 plays as well as be open for the pass when its his number. 8 damn plays and build from there. An idiot can see that this guy is a mis-match to any DB in the league... LB too. As Ive said... run down, turn around up, jump up and catch the ball.

He doesn't need to block. There's lots of tight ends making a living catching the ball .

Gathers will fight for time with Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin and rookie Dalton Schultz in the Cowboys tight-ends room. But with 15-year starter Jason Witten's retirement and new coach Doug Nussmeier taking over tight ends, there's opportunity for change.

"You've got to kind of step up when 8-2 [Witten] left," quarterback Dak Prescott said Thursday. "We've got some guys who have definitely done that."

Garrett said last week that Gathers has noticeably improved since Dallas drafted him in 2016.

"He's a different player now than he was a couple of years ago when he first showed up," Garrett said. "But he just needs to play more football."

Playing more at 280-285 instead of 265 will also help, Gathers thinks. No longer does he intend to be the body absorbing pass rushers' blows.

"Now coming off, I'm delivering the blow," Gathers said. "I'm delivering the shot."

The beast has to be able to block. I think he will be better at it this year and get his big break.

I hope so. I do not expect him to be a devastating blocker, I do expect him to know his blocking responsibilities on any given play where he is asked to block. I fully expect the Cowboys to give him a legitimate chance to earn the job, I don't think they have kept him for 2 season with the intent of working with him and developing him as a player for nothing. It really falls to him to go out and show he is capable of handling the job that is required for this offense.

And there it is, right out of Garrett's mouth. Rico needs the opportunity to make the team. If not given a reasonable opportunity, that's on Garrett and nobody else.

Yeah I think the blocking itself wont be a problem. It’s the responsibility of who and where he needs to be. That’s him studying the playbook and getting on the field. Probly what JG meant by him needing to play more football.

Dallas has been willing to hang on to Gathers for the past 2 seasons. They watch him during the practice and pre season, he will once again have his chances, it falls to him just as it will fall to Swaim, Jarwin and Shultz to go out and earn the job.

That would be to simple Garrett needs to over think everything

Exactly, he does not have to blow people up with his blocking but he has to know what his responsibility is. Why does he need to be able to block? he could be 1 injury away from being a starter and Dallas can't have a situation where the offense must be altered away from the run game because the starting TE got injured.

I mean, hes still a complete question mark and may not even make the 53.

If he stays healthy through camp, so he can practice and get his reps, I think he makes it.

I agree. He'll be yet another compelling story to watch in training camp. With his story open to go in either direction. I can just as easily see him forcing the team to keep four TE's as I can him not making the team. The ending has yet to be written.

If Gathers doesn’t make the team again, it’ll be because of Gathers and not because of the coaches, again.

He’s limited in more than just his blocking. Just because we’ve seen him successful on a handful of preseason passing plays, it doesn’t mean he’s mastered his responsibilities on passing downs.

When other players are talking about him dominating in practice, we’ll know we actually have something. It won’t be from a cut-up of only his successful reps at an offseason conditioning camp.

I agree and fact is playing vs 2nd and 3rd string in pre season does not ensure anything. I like the fact he has bulked up and knows he must improve in his blocking. We have 3 other TE each of them able to block and if they show themselves as just as good at receiving why would I cut the more complete players?

If Garret let's him walk. Hes an idiot. And if he does make the roster and doesnt get see the field. Well once again. Idiot Garrett.
I know I know blocking. Yet other teams play te's who dont block.

so go ahead and say Garrett is an Idiot, because I still don't see all the man crush on Gathers..... just because he is big and he can run doesn't make him a football player. he is got a bit of ways to go. otherwise, there are 100 other Basketball players, that are big and fast and you don't see all of them turn into TE.yes, gates and graham made but how many failed and didn't make it....if it was all about measurable, then every Olympic sprinter would be a great WR.

if Gathers fails, its on him and nobody else.

It sure in hell doesnt hurt. There's a reason NFL teams go to the combine every year. It's to test and measure who is the biggest and the fastest.

Claiming all basketball players could play TE. Is foolish. Basketball players tend to be more tall then big or large. This kid is built like a football player.

Oh and did you see the hands? Smooth as silk

Whoa! Are you saying we shouldn’t be sending scouts to the Mr Olympia? Maybe we could drag Ronnie Coleman out of retirement, imagine what a stud he would be on the football field! With those legs he could move entire O lines by himself, his arms are so big hevwould wrap up the qb like an anaconda on a mouse.
