Just about every tight end in the league looks good running basic pass patterns in camp.

Like anybody I'll give him a chance, but he'll have to perform in pre-season before I'll pay much attention to him...

But he's learning a new sport fresh from scrap at the NFL level. He's improved dramatically in 1 year. Imagine how much better he is going to be a year from now once he understands the game better and gets some game experience behind him?

I can't imagine that the Dallas Cowboys roster is where you go when you want to learn how to play football.

Can't Garrett just sponsor a football camp at a local Jr. High School during the offseason like everybody else?

This is what I disagree with. Not using him as a threat in the passing game because he's not a reliable blockers is extremely shortsighted. By using him as a threat down the seam or splitting him out wide, you're taking a LBer out of the play. That's just as effective as blocking at the 2nd level. For example:

88 11 77 55 72 70 71 80 13

4 21

A team has to come out in nickel against this formation. With just one route, let's say a skinny post down the seam, Gathers opens up 3 things from RPO.
1: 5-man defensive box if LB supports covering 80 downfield (run)
2: Seam route pass if 80 is in single coverage, body position against the safety is built in
3: Man coverage on outside WR, depending on safety rotation

You're getting 3 legitimate options from 1 route simply because of Gathers' size, and he hasn't had to throw a block yet. Witten couldn't do this the last couple of years, and this is basic, easy, RPO. You could run this play 5 times a game, and that's not accounting for how effective he can be in the red zone.

If Gathers can't command a double team down the seam, then he has no place in the NFL, but he can absolutely be a weapon in this offense, regardless of how well he can block.

The thing is, if he is lining up in a traditional TE spot, his effectiveness is at least partially dependent on whether he is effective both blocking and receiving. If he is only a receiver, opposing defenses will know that and adjust accordingly. If you are talking about spreading him wide, we could also spread an extra WR out rather than use a guy who runs a 4.75 as a pure receiver. Another issue is that because the Cowboys use a TE to block so much, Rico would have to be able to fill that role in case of injury, and if he can't, he isn't the depth the team needs.

Of course, if Rico were a Gronkowski level talent as a receiver a team would find a way, but Rico isn't in that area code.

If our CB’s are playing up and our D-Line is getting consistent pressure then it takes stress off the position. I worry more about us stopping the run and screen plays.
LBers have to be solid too.

If Garret let's him walk. Hes an idiot. And if he does make the roster and doesnt get see the field. Well once again. Idiot Garrett.
I know I know blocking. Yet other teams play te's who dont block.

Theres no question for a guy his size hes fluid and can catch the ball from my understanding its the blocking
hes not very good with but I will tell you this if I'm a Coach and we keep 3 TE's than hes number 3 if we keep
4 TE's than hes number 4. He makes my team even if his blocking is not up to snuff because he could be a
dynamic TE Receiver due to his size and frame especially in the redzone.

The funny thing about that is they basically have all #1 players on the oline who are also taking up half the teams salary cap and they need help with a TE blocking!
Where was the TE to help out Green in the Atlanta game?

Agreed

LBers have to be solid too.
Lee stays healthy, Jaylon improves and we can introduce LVE at our pace instead of him being forced into action. Jaylon played more last year than he should have when hitchens got hurt.

And if LVE talks like Thad Castle in "Blue Mountain State" I will be enormously ecstatic.

Whoa! Are you saying we shouldn’t be sending scouts to the Mr Olympia? Maybe we could drag Ronnie Coleman out of retirement, imagine what a stud he would be on the football field! With those legs he could move entire O lines by himself, his arms are so big hevwould wrap up the qb like an anaconda on a mouse.

speaking of bodybuilders and football - super star from Gilmer, TX - veteran of Super Bowl II (Raiders CB/KR) and Viet Nam - arguably the the most decorated BB ever and still competing at age 74 ... meet my friend Robert Stonewall Jackson ...

Rico does look huge in those videos.

But, he also didn’t look that quick in the videos either. Now it’s impossible to tell for certain without using a stopwatch or seeing him do the drills next to another receiver who has speed, but that’s just the impression I got from the videos.

Then again, with his size, being open is going to be more about body position than it will speed in and out of his breaks.

so go ahead and say Garrett is an Idiot, because I still don't see all the man crush on Gathers..... just because he is big and he can run doesn't make him a football player. he is got a bit of ways to go. otherwise, there are 100 other Basketball players, that are big and fast and you don't see all of them turn into TE.yes, gates and graham made but how many failed and didn't make it....if it was all about measurable, then every Olympic sprinter would be a great WR.

if Gathers fails, its on him and nobody else.

And Gates played through high school and was actually a major college prospect and was recruited to play football for Nick Saban at Michigan State. He only quit football when Saban wouldn't allow him to play 2 sports in college.

Rico isn't even close to being a starting TE for the Cowboys. He's 4th on the depth chart and will be extremely lucky to make the 54 man roster. His best chance is to get hurt in TC and go back on IR for another season. Falling in love with him and tell lies about his "progress" all you want, it doesn't change the reality of his status on this team. He's a glorified bench warmer at best.

These Gathers videos are now starting to fall somewhere between comedy & train wrecks. Either way I am watching.
Hes a big dude. People claim he hasn't caught many passes but I haven't seen him drop any.

He was tearing it up in practice with Romo dropping them in just right

I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't make the team
I wouldn't be surprised but then again I wouldn't be surprised if Belicheck doesnt scoop him up and make a star out of him.

We are not the only team there are another 31 teams. And thall thier coaches aren't as anal retentive as big red
