I want to preface this post by saying I've only avidly watched football for about ten years. What exactly does Garrett do aside from press conferences if this is the case? Please excuse my ignorance.

Think of all the organization and communications that must occur on the sidelines from coordinators to trainers to equipment managers. Much of what is not about the play being called is handled by a procedure and protocol, but when its inefficient, you can be sure it will be the HC who addresses it during the week. McCarthy will be livid this week he did not have Lacy for the first 4th down conversion because he had no communications from his training staff that Lacy was unavailable. He should have called a timeout...another HC responsibility.

Thanks for the detailed response and thanks to the other responses. To me it sounds like Garrett and other HC's are like restaurant managers and they rely heavily on the head chef, bartender and to a lesser extent the dishwashers and busboys.
