DeMarco Murray wasn’t bluffing. The free-agent running back’s visit to Philadelphia on Thursday wasn’t a ploy to get the Cowboys to up their offer to retain the league’s rushing champion.

Instead, Murray flew to Philadelphia to cash in on a career year in which he broke Emmitt Smith’s club season rushing record with 1,845 yards.

Murray chose the Eagles over offers from the Cowboys, Oakland and Jacksonville. He signed a five-year, $42 million contract with $21 million guaranteed, becoming one of the league’s top-five paid backs.

The Cowboys still have more than $8 million in salary cap space. Money that could have been spent to re-sign Murray can now go toward upgrading the defense with some bargain-priced depth players.

This is the part that scares me a bit. To upgrade this defense, you don't need bargain priced depth players. They need key players at DE, LB and could have used an upgrade maybe at CB.

I really can't believe that the Jones' and Garrett can look at this defense and think, gee, it's OK, we'll just get a few depth guys and it will be a-OK.

Still not sure why all these guys keep saying Peterson is not coming, not saying he is but that is far from over Jerry wants butts in those seats and right now it looks like cowboys are just losing guys adding somebody like Peterson would spark huge interest from fringe fans that don't follow the boys like we all do. Not saying AD is the right thing to do but it will sell your tickets for sure.

I am with you on this, take that money and get the best player out there, Hardy.

AP is NOT coming to Dallas, winning fill seats, not a players name and when it comes to Jerry's world, half the stadium is filled with visiting fans so he isn't worried about fans in the seats... Jerry was pretty clear in his letter about Murray, you can't pay everyone in the salary cap era.... Jerry made that mistake in the past overpaying players and where has that got them, He knows MORE money needs to be allocated towards the defense, because Defense wins championships and this defense needs some serious upgrading so if you can't afford Murray's contract at 8.5 million a year, how can you afford AP's contract at 13 million a year and the vikings still owe him 40 million in salary...Running backs are a dime a dozen and the position is deep in this draft so you can get a good one, Murray was a third round pick remember...I'm happy with what Jerry has done over the last couple of years early in the draft, except trading up for Claiborne, he might be finally getting it...teams are built from the inside out......

Yeah I'm a bit perplexed although it's still early. The 2 guys we've signed are "break glass in case of emergency" types. Seemingly all of the quality in free agency is drying up on the defensive side of the ball.

Seriously!

This is a defense bereft of talent and you don't fix that by picking over leftovers.

I'll still believe he's coming here until it's clearly proven he's not.

What does it say about the accuracy of the author of the article when he says that Gurley ran a 4.45 at the combine?

At this point the draft is the place they will get defensive help. Plus perhaps re-signing McClain.

Hardy would not hurt.

People need to get OFF the Hardy train... He's an abusive scumbag who faces a long suspension. We won't sign him IMO

Well there are no impact free agents left on defense that can help us in our two positions of need - DE and LB - other than Hardy.

And with Murray gone, if they don't find a TB in free agency, now what do you do with the first pick? DE or TB?

The more holes you create in FA the more pressure you put on yourself to have to make more and more picks be "hits" in the draft.

Oh AD is the right thing to do.

When he loses 15% of his ability he'll be on Demarcos current level.

For the most part they got away with it last year, because Murray's running kept the bad defense off the field fpr the most part.but they will not get away with it this year. and it won't get better by adding scrubs. if they don't go out and spend some money on some guys like Hardy and Fairley, to help get a pass rush. it's going to be a long year.
