Getting a legit FS is just as big a need as getting Dline help

There is definitely need for help on the D-line, but I'm really hoping we can snag either Dix or Pryor with the first pick. There should be a starting quality DT(our biggest need on the DL) in the second. I won't be opposed to trading up to the early second to get one either. The thought of getting one of those guys at safety to complete our defensive secondary seems the rout to go if one were available IMO. Matter of a fact a decent FA or two can lessen our need to be looking exclusively at DL with our first pick.

I agree with the fact that if the safety is by far the best player on your board, then take him.

But the idea that we need a safety just as much a need as d line is ridiculous.. If we had 4 guys that played like Hatcher last year instead of 1, we would have been a top 5 defense despite who our safeties were

Is that supposed to be Matt Johnson? His college number was 5, not 4.

When you have a total of 3 defensive nfl caliber staring players on your rosters, you can take just about anyone on defense and call it a need

But until we get legit talent up front, these players on the back end don't matter.

We do need better S play but the most pressing need is to regain the line of scrimmage.

We need both. But DL is the bigger need this offseason. We've needed S help forever.

I can agree w this. I'm just saying our defense is less talented than most realize

I agree we need a Safety but I would load up on the trenches. We need DL talent most IMO.

No way, Kyle Wilber, Tyrone Crawford, Ben Bass, and Wilcox/Heath are going to save our D.

But to respond to the thread topic......I agree that it's a big need, but I think it can be filled without using a premium pick or big $. Clemons or Gamble in free agency should be fairly reasonable contracts, or Jimmie Ward or Terrance Brooks in the 3rd/4th would be more than enough to adequately fill the position in my opinion.

Didn't we blame Roy for our defensive problems even though we got almost got 50 sacks in 07,in this day and age safeties who can cover are equally important.

I first thought it might be his twin brother, but he is #10.

I just tried to figure out who it was but a quick google search did not reveal the answer. He kind of looks like Johnson for sure.

College players sometimes switch Jersey numbers. The #5 might not have been available when he first arrived at Eastern Washington.

Missing my point. I believe upgrading the D L is a need, a priority even. All I'm saying is getting an impact safety decreases significantly after the top two are gone. We can find a starting lineman in the second round for sure and possibly going into third as well. Not to mention a middle of the road free agent like Joseph or Melton would ease the desperation as well.

I agree there are only two really tier 1 safeties that could come in an fight for a starting job. All the others look to be backups or starters down the line. Once those two are gone and I think at least one will be by the time we pick in the 1st. I think Dix will be gone and that would leave us to Pryor who is the same size and speed only diff IMO is he did not have the SEC gauntlet to contend with his collegiate years like Ha Ha Dix endured. IMO Dix is a better cover guy and already an improvement on JJ Wilcox/Jeff Heath as they played in their rookie campaign. I have high hopes for a big jump from Wilcox this next season, he had a rough go of it last year with his mom passing and missing essential practice time.
If the Dlineman we covet is gone I am all for another high value target, we have passed on too many BPA IMO.

I think adding a stud FS would make a big difference and may even be required to COMPLETE the building of a great defense.

But starting up front and adding talented difference makers on the DL is what we need to BEGIN that process.

There is no one single right way to do things, but in general, this is how it is done. The odds are just far more favorable to have a really good defense that is great up front and lacking to some degree on the back end than vice versa.

I completely disagree on Dix being a better cover guy. Watch the bowl game, he got smoked several times in coverage. I think Pryor, Ward and Brooks are better in coverage the Dix
