Don't ask me why, but the thought we could be bringing him in has me a bit excited and I want the announcement to happen sooner rather than later. The no news is good news stuff doesn't wash in this case. I'd like to hear the actual good news.

Though he has never worked with LBs I find that I'm not too concerned because he's got 35 years of experience on Defense behind him.

You know I'm starving for news when I'm watching the wires about a coaching hire.

I guess I still don't see why there's so much love for Capers. I'd rather have Pagano.

Unless we're talking about a coordinator-in-waiting, which is a stupid idea anyway.

I don't think the hire will happen today, so don't get your hopes up too much for an announcement today.

Ditto. Here's my conspiracy theory. Capers thought to himself that it would be a good opportunity to come to Dallas because if Wade doesn't win a Super Bowl, he's fired next season, and he'd get to just jump right up to DC if Garrett is replaces Wade. Then he came down and realized that Wade was running the show in terms of interviewing coaches, etc., and now isn't sure if that's the case. But by now it might be too late in the game for him to get any desirable DC positions, so he'll come be our linebacker coach reluctantly, but not immediately.

Hostile, my impression of capers, you said he didnt have linebacker experience, wasnt his main duty with pittsburgh to teach the linebackers, like working with greg lloyd, etc,

Hos' post got me to look that up, and it's true. Capers was the DB coach for Jim Mora in the USFL and then followed him to the Saints. He then became the DC for the Steelers.

So Capers has never coached linebackers.

Why are we bringing this guy in again?

I totally agree with you and share your feelings. This hire would cancel out my trepidation over the Campo rehire.

I don't think your conspiracy theory has no traction. Capers isn't young -- someone said he's about 56 now and there not a lot of times looking for a DC specializing in the 34. Furthermore I'm sure Jerry is prepared to pay him real good money to come join our coaching staff. Jerry probably figures he needs all the brains/experience he can get to see this team over the December lows. I wouldn't be surprised if the delay has something to do with what title to offer him. Garrett already is the Asst Head Coach and Stewart is the DC. I know most of us wanted Pagano but don't think the Chargers will let him go. When Charger GM was asking by reporters during senior bowl practices about possibility Pagano going to the Cowboys he refused to discuss it. So we are moving on. Of course it might help the situation with Stewart that he worked under Capers in Houston so they knew each other well. I think Jerry will come up with something.

Why are we bringing this guy in again?

Because he is a good defensive coach?

Does anyone question his abilities just because he has never been a LB coach?

I mean he has been a pretty good DC over the years...I would think he knows a thing or two about LBs.:D

If you can coordinate an entire defense/offense you can coach any position on that side of the ball most likely.

Sure, you *could* coach any position... But this would be the equivalent of hiring Dave Campo to coach the defensive line. Wouldn't that seem a little strange?

Maybe it would work fine, and since it looks like we'll hire him, I hope it does. But it's starting to smell a little rotten to me.

I know it happens a great deal in college. Probably happens a great deal in the NFL. By that I mean coaches that may not have coached a specific position but are hired on to coach that position with a team.

As long as a coach knows his stuff and is able to communicate it effectively to his players, he can coach any position. That kind of thing is inconsequential.

I can buy that. It really does follow the logic of what has been going on.

Wade has been running these interviews.

Well pasqualoni never coached linebackers in the nfl until two years ago. He had never coached tight ends at any level when he was hired here, but he was viewed as a smart coach.

So he was hired and then moved to linebackers coach. He was SU's LB coach for 3 or 4 years before becoming the head coach, and of course he was a linebacker at penn state, so he knew the position.

I am not sure if capers can coach the linebackers, I am not sure he cant. I dont know his bio outside of his nfl stops. I am thinking he can however.

After the SuperBowl, there will be an annoucement. The Cowboys organization is on their way to Arizonia.

Coaching at any level is about communication. Convincing your players you know what you're talking about. That can either be done through charisma, or proof in game situations, and is best accomplished through both. If you turned your players on to some offensive key, and they saw it in the game, their confidence grows as does their trust in you.

I doubt there's anyone out there who can teach Capers anything about LB play. I think he'd be able to teach our LBs alot, though.

There are nuances to every position, and I'd rather have a guy who has been actively coaching those techniques to players day after day. It's not just about firing guys up and getting them to play.

That's why Bill brought in Jim Burt and others to coach two-gap technique, and why Wade first wanted Pagano.

I just assumed before that Capers had been a LB coach before he became a coordinator. Now that I know he's not, I wonder what's going on. Maybe it's something like theogt suggested.
