Getting Tyler Smith pre-draft vibes with Steve Avila these days

Everything I read about Avila is he struggles with lateral movement. Especially with speed rushers. This speaks to the passing game and why this team fails.

I admit I have a pet cat now. But I think I can make a case for drafting a guard with 26 to shore up the offensive line. I am not a proponent of this line as it stands now.
You're reading the wrong reports...

He didn't allow a single sack in 515 pass-blocking snaps in his final season at TCU.

I wonder if they will trade out of the first round, pick up an extra 3rd and grab Avila

I do not see what you all see in Avila.

Good not great.

Top 50 guy buy way closer to 50, than 26.

Is is a Fort Worth thing?

Takes way too many plays off for me.
Get your eyes checked.

But no one really is talking about him at 26; trade down and then take him.
BUT only if a higher ranked guy that fits a need is not there at 26. Which is certainly possible.

Tyler Smith was a homerun pick.
We’ll see. He flashed and I have hopes he can turn into a quality OT bc the team seems want him to stick there but last year he played like a 2nd rookie rookie…which is where he was pegged.

Ton of penalties, decent amount of sacks / pressures and a very low pass pro win rate.

Parsons was a home run pick. Tyler is a wait and see pick.

Tyler actually did better than I thought he would; and more to the point his penalty tendency seems to have NOT followed him into the NFL.

So all the draft analysis sites are incorrect about his lateral movement and speed rushers give him problems?

There is a lot to like with Avilia:

-Has the ability to play all interior spots, which this team always looks for. This will give him an edge over Torrence, who is just a Guard only.
-He is excellent in pass protection
-Plug and play day 1 starter.

What worries me is his technique in the run game. Bad hand placement, tends to play high and doesn't allow him to get much push in the run game. Yes, these are fixable with the right coaching.

I don't see him as an elite guard, when I say elite, an all pro or pro bowl type of player. This is why you don't use a 1st rd pick on him. Fully understand the class at Guard is extremely shallow and top heavy, especially day 1 plug and play starters. Believe there should still be options at 58 and there is an outside chance he is still available.

He had 13 penalties and led the NFL…I’m not sure so follow you?
Not as bad as he was in college so I think he will do better. and we all know Dallas O line players get more ticky tack calls then most

I did not see that bad a technique in run blocking as you; he is rough there but his other pluses are more important
and I doubt anyone is thinking of him at 26, right at the end of rd 1 would be about right.

I think there will be other players with higher grades on our board that will be available. Heck if they really want Avila he will be available I think in round 2. They may need to move up to get him, but don’t make the same mistake they made when they ended up settling for Joseph in round 2.

Think there is some development needed as he has to learn how to use his hands/feet better as a run blocker.

Oh yeah that's right - the refs have a conspiracy against the Cowboys.

Steve Avila allowed just four QB hits (at four different positions) over the last four seasons (1,170 pass-blocking snaps).

Leading the NFL is pretty bad…like you I hope he improves. Showed some good flashes.

You should stop watching football.

Tyler Smith is already a top 5 player on the roster.

Erik Williams had a lot of penalties.

I love watching football. Tyler led the NFL in penalties, gave up 38 pressures last year, multiple sacks, has a below average PFF pass pro grade and was outside the top 50 in pass pro win rate.

Please explain to me how he was a top 5 player on the roster in 2022.
