You would think that the Giants would have learned that from last season but I guess not. What this tells me is that the Giants got desperate and are not relying on the draft.

We have to credit Jerry and Wade because we have been excellent in FA and not breaking the bank for one player. Someone said earlier that with big $$ comes big egos and I am really buying into that. Are signings from last year were cost effective and they ALL worked out.

We'll all see how average Antrel Rolle is when he has to help cover the likes of Miles Austin, Patrick Crayton, Kevin Ogletree, Jason Witten, Jeremy Maclin, DeSean Jackson, Brent Celek, and yes, even Roy Williams twice a year in the coming years.

Plus, this still doesn't solve the Giants' linebacking or pass-rush problems.

Source: Rolle to be highest-paid safety

Antrel Rolle is set to become the highest-paid safety in NFL history.
The New York Giants agreed to a five-year, $37 million deal with Rolle, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Rolle is guaranteed $15 million and will receive $22.5 million over the first three years.

The signing fills a major need for the Giants, who lost Kenny Phillips to a serious knee injury early last season.

Phillips is expected back this season and having the two Miami products deep in the secondary should help a defense that struggled last year.

Rolle, who was recently released by the Cardinals, had four interceptions last season. The one that impressed the Giants the most came in late October when he stepped in front of Steve Smith to intercept an Eli Manning pass around the Cardinals 21-yard line with 68 seconds to play to nail down a 24-17 win.

New York had driven from its own 1-yard line in the final three minutes in an attempt to tie the game.

Arizona, which also lost linebacker Karlos Dansby to Miami late Friday, released Rolle on Thursday because it wanted to avoid paying him the $4 million roster bonus and the $8 million salary he was due.
However, the battle for Rolle came down to the Giants and Cardinals, and Rolle chose New York after visiting with the team most of Friday.

Rolle was Arizona's first-round pick, the eighth selection overall, out of Miami in 2005. He began his pro career as a cornerback but had most of his success after being switched to safety in 2008.

In 68 regular-season games, 59 as a starter, he had 12 interceptions, four forced fumbles and 1½ sacks. In six postseason games, Rolle had an interception and a fumble recovery.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

I hope so because 37 million or not. The Giants just got better.

I'm hoping Jerry is tempted to just cash in and get Earl Thomas.

screw it. We're trying to win a ring.

**** the New York Free Agents.

Why do you persist in this. E Thomas will be the second safety picked unless Mays pole vaults him in which case they are all three going in the top 15 to 20 picks likely 15. WE CAN NOT MOVE UP THAT FAR.

Nate Allen is the next cover safety available although there's a box safety rated between Mays and Allen. Sorry forget the name. Allen should be there in the top of the second. However if we sit tight we can get a good LT at 27.

This should be an offensive draft although S and CB though LB could be drafted.

Please, The Giants didn't get better. Antrel Rolle is going to make that defense better please. The Giants still have plenty of holes on offense and defense and Rolle is not going to solve that problem.

On closer review, Rolle's deal is better than Sanders', too

In response to the widespread assertion that the contract signed on Friday night by safety Antrel Rolle with the Giants carries the highest value of any safety in league history, some of you have asked the age-old question (when considering crappy movies from the early 1990s), "What about Bob?"

As in Bob Sanders.

Here's the breakdown.

In year one, Sanders received $8.5 million. Rolle will get $10 million.

After two years, Sanders pocketed $15.615 million. Rolle will have made a total of $15.5 million.

Through three years, Sanders' total take is $21.735 million. Rolle will have $22.5 million.

After four, $24.510 million for Sanders and $29.75 million for Rolle.

After five, $30.5 million for Sanders and $37 million for Rolle.

Sanders has a sixth year to get to the full value of $38.5 million.

(The difference, in large part, comes from the fact that Sanders signed a five-year, $37.5 million extension; Rolle signed a five-year deal from scratch.)

There's also a difference as to guaranteed money. Though Sanders' total guarantee was $19 million, only $8 million is guaranteed for skill and injury. For Rolle, all $15 million is guaranteed for skill and injury.

Anyway, some of your wanted details. So those are the details.

I bet you now wish you didn't ask.

Yeah Rolle definitely deserves all dat cash(lol). One less team going after ET i guess? I'd be more satisfied with getting ET than overpaying for "talent" again.

Thats just insane money for a safety, he makes more than freaking Palomolu. The G-men can have him for that type of deal, he was flat out gang rapped by the Packer WRs in the playoffs.

Sorry, but making Rolle the highest paid safety in the league is just ****ing dumb.

At one time it was Adam Archuleta.

Has nothing to do with how good one player is to another but rather when their contracts are up.

lol I agree on getting ET, but you do know what round you would have to get Thomas in right??? LOL, your 1st round pick buddy, he isn't coming cheap. So if I am being honest, I'd much rather sign Bathea to a pretty good deal where the Colts wouldn't want to match and give them our 1st

Hopefully we don't counter it by paying another safety even more money than that. I'd rather we not over pay for another safety.
what does it matter...its not coming out of your pocket its jerrys pocket and there is no salary cap

as this league transforms from a run first league to a more pass happy league. Safeties are becomin more and more valuable. I truly believe that Polamalu deserves cornerback money. If you look at the difference he makes for the Steelers. When he plays they are a top 3 defense when he does not they are middle of the pact

In this day in age, you need 2 free safeties and 0 strong safeties..Their starting duo WILL BE Phillips and Rolle and I know there is no way you think otherwise

I agree with you there. Possibly they just have them both play a FS type of role.

If Phillips can comeback that is.

Maybe I spoke too soon..I had no idea about this. I thought he just had a regular type of season ending injury..I apologize to BH..

Nah I knew about the injury and that possibility. I just figured they wouldn't put them both on the field at the same time since they're both FS types but I suppose they could do that rather than have a traditional strong safety back there.

There is no cap THIS YEAR. The sooner some of you people get it through your head that the cap isn't going away forever the better. You have to think about the future, where there will once again be a cap, when making these signings as well otherwise what happens in the future when they bring the cap back?

That's right you signed a bunch of guys to expensive deals that you now have to cut in order to get under the new cap. So you paid a bunch of money, potentially, to have guys for 1 or 2 years.

Thanks but no thanks. I like the approach the Cowboys are taking much better. I'm thankful every single day that this team isn't run by people like quite a few of the people on this forum who can't see beyond 3 inches in front of their noses when making decisions.

The Giants just got Ken Hamlin'd.

In 2 or 3 years, they'll wake up and come to the same conclusion we did when we signed Hamlin to an equally ludicrous deal. "What were we thinking?"

I just looked up what Kenny Phillip's injury is and now I see why NYG signed Rolle pretty quickly. He has patellofemoral arthritis, a quick google look up of this injury and you will find that it very serious and there is no guarantee that treatment/surgery will work. He has already undergone the dreaded micro-fracture knee surgery procedure to repair the damage but with this type of problem, from what I have read, there is no getting better but rather stopping the degeneration.

I believe the Rolle signing was indicative that the NYG coaches are not counting on Phillips to return 100% if he returns at all. It would be a huge gamble if they believe KP will return to form this upcoming season and not have some type of back-up plan.

I still think NYG overpayed this guy and to all the people saying he is a pro-bowler - the guy was a second alternate meaning he never would have made it if Sharper decided to play.

At the 27 spot? The contract wont be much of an issue for a rookie. Think 5 years/ 12 mil.

And how much would we have to offer for the Colts not to match? A 1st rounder at our selection probably gets somewhere around 2 million a year while Bathea probably wants around 8 million now and that might not be enough to keep the Colts away.

Edit: TheCount beat me. That's what I get for starting the post and answering the phone.
