SF got their return man

I wonder if this drops Spiller a few slots on their board now.

Spiller isn't even the Top RB on Gosselin's positoinal rankings, Ryan Matthews is. I don't think the NFL is thrilled with the idea of spending a Top 20 pick on a 195 lbs. part time role back.

Not sure who they will take but with the 13 and 17 pick the Niners are setting themselves up very well to become a contending team in the near future.

What does Gosselin have to do with who SF may or may not be targeting?

I believe SF (and at least half the teams) have Spiller rated higher than Matthews....but I could care less. I just keep hearing his name pop up with SF's second 1st rounder.

You comment does make me curious. Were you one the guys who was hating on Chris Johnson before the draft?
Just curious, because that is what people said about him. And no, I'm not saying Spiller = CJ at all.

I'd agree.

If they get a corner and another OT, they'll be in good shape, especially in the weakest division in football.

Ginn is no better of a kick returner than Ogletree and he's downright bad as a punt returner. We didn't miss out on anything.

I kind of surprised that QB is not on the list. Alex Smith has been with them 6 years now and still very erratic in his play. Would the 9ers go after Jimmy Clausen?

they probably won't, but they need a real qb, imo, if they really want to take it to the next level (i.e., legitimate super bowl contender on a more regular basis).

reason why we didnt get him Hos is we didnt have a 5th rounder, remember it was for Holland who hardly played at all.

I wonder who goofed on having the cowboys trade for him on the cowboys staff, because Holland sure didnt play worth a 5th rounder

Dolphins, 49ers announce Ted Ginn trade
Posted by Mike Florio on April 16, 2010 3:27 PM ET
The principals in the latest pre-draft trade have announced the deal via separate press releases. And the press releases have slightly different tone and content.

The Dolphins, who sent the ninth pick in the 2007 draft to the 49ers, issued a short statement indicating only that they received an "undisclosed draft pick."

In contrast, the 49ers disclosed the draft pick, a fifth-round selection (145th overall).

Moreover, the Dolphins had nothing at all to say about the "undisclosed" draft pick they received. The 49ers gushed about Ginn.

"First of all, I am very thankful that [vice president of player personnel] Trent [Baalke] was able to make this work out," coach Mike Singletary said. "We added a talented player, that fit a need. He's a bundle of potential and his upside is off the charts. This guy can fly."

Said Baalke, "We are very excited to add a player to our team with the explosiveness that Ted possesses. Ted gives our coaching staff another quality player to utilize on game day."

And so one, once again, team's trash becomes another team's potential treasure. Though it remains to be seen whether the 49ers' optimism is warranted, they definitely feel better about the move than the Dolphins do.

2 1st rd picks I will not be surprised in the draft gurus get it wrong and 9ers get a QB. Like you I think it is an area of real need for San Fran.

The 49ers won't draft a QB. They already have Nate Davis to groom. Davis was very rated very high based on his intangibles but fell because of dislexia and throwing the ball without using the grip. He was the best rookie QB last year in the pre season. I think they will draft Dez Bryant to complete that WR trio (Crabtree/Bryant/Morgan or Ginn).

Well, with the other WR on the 49ers roster, Singletary is going to have to take some daycare classes.

They may not but they did bring Jimmy Clausen in for an interview. So with 2 #1 picks I think there is a chance.

Crayton had two td returns last yr and almost nobody in this forum gives him credit for it, why should it be any different with Ted Ginn? I know the answer by the way.

Ginn's a total waste of roster space and has no ability to play a useful role in a teams offense.

Parcells, Ireland and Sparano are laughing their butts off over this.

He had two Punt Returns, not two Kick Returns. Lets just make this clear.

Secondly, this is a done deal so any discussion from here on out is with the understanding that it's a waste of time.

Thirdly, we do need a Kick Returner. If you think we can get one in this draft cheaper then Ginn, I'm fine with that. If not, you got zero point here.

I hear Jerrah is considering moving the Cowboys to the Arena Football League because he's just about giving up trying to compete in the NFL.

He's also rumored to rehire Parcells as the headcoach once the move is completed.

Dern straight, 27th pick in the draft as well, no one will be there. EVER.

Rehire Parcells and bring back DeHaven as ST and every bad OC person we ever had.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Mike Singletary called Ted Ginn Jr. on Friday to personally welcome him to the San Francisco 49ers.

The fastest draft bust in Miami Dolphins history is bound for the Bay Area -- filling one of the Niners' biggest offseason needs in the process and giving Ginn a well-timed fresh start across the country in the NFC West.

"We added a talented player that fit a need," Singletary said. "He's a bundle of potential and his upside is off the charts. This guy can fly."

Ginn, a receiver and quality return man, was traded to the 49ers on Friday for a fifth-round pick -- the 145th overall selection. The Dolphins had him on the block even before they acquired Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall on Wednesday from the Denver Broncos.

While Ginn wasn't sure he was on his way out when Miami got Marshall, he had a pretty good idea.

"If you know the game and you know the business, you are ready for anything," he said on a conference call. "I'm just going to come into the 49ers and show 'em what I got."

Dolphins fans began booing Ginn the day he was drafted and never stopped. Taken with the ninth overall pick in 2007, he made only five touchdown catches in three seasons while averaging 13.0 yards per reception.

Ginn was more successful on special teams, scoring on kickoff returns of 100 and 101 yards in the same quarter of a game against the New York Jets last season. He became the first player with two kickoff returns of at least 100 yards in the same game.

That kind of explosive play-making ability in the return game is exactly what San Francisco was seeking after several different players Singletary tried last season couldn't do a reliable job. Ginn hasn't regularly returned punts since his rookie season, but he's eager to take on that role for a 49ers team that finished 8-8 and ended a franchise-worst stretch of six straight losing campaigns.

"That's one of the things I like to do," Ginn said. "We haven't really talked about depth charts or playing time. They are welcoming me with open arms and I'm going to come in and just compete and be the player that I am. Just let my play talk for whatever needs to be said. ... [Singletary] called today and said he was happy I was coming to the 49ers; it's a great situation for him and me."

This was the first big move made by the 49ers since the abrupt departure of general manager Scot McCloughan last month. Team president Jed York called it a "mutual parting" and immediately put director of player personnel Trent Baalke in charge of the draft and everything leading up to it.

Baalke said Thursday he would be both patient and aggressive in his approach to acquiring players.

"We're going to get the players we have targeted, I promise you that," Baalke said.

The Dolphins still have receivers Brian Hartline, Davone Bess and Greg Camarillo as complements to Marshall. In San Francisco, Ginn will be paired with Michael Crabtree.

"I've still got hopes of being an elite receiver," Ginn said, acknowledging special teams as an asset to his game. "I'm just going to come in and do both."

The 49ers hope Ginn can fulfill the potential he showed at Ohio State, where he tied an NCAA record with eight touchdown returns.

When Miami's selection of Ginn was announced at a team draft party, fans jeered -- they wanted Brady Quinn. The decision was frequently mocked by detractors of coach Cam Cameron, who lasted only one season.

Ginn drew criticism for running poor routes and shying away from contact. Last season he lost his job as a starting receiver and totaled only 38 receptions for 454 yards and one score.

"I wouldn't say a sense of relief but it's always good to have a new start. Leaving Miami, I don't hold and grudges and no bad feelings about anything. My time was up there. I enjoyed it there and now it's time to move on," Ginn said. "There's no bad blood. It's the best decision for both of us."

Now under the Bill Parcells regime, the Dolphins announced the trade in a one-sentence release and had no further comment.

While Ginn had been taking part in Miami's offseason workouts, he's ready to shift gears and get settled at the 49ers' Santa Clara headquarters.

"Whenever they send for me," he said of when he would show up.

It's a good trade for a young team that needs to field a great unit in at least one area of play. Special teams in this case.
