Based on what?
Based on the fact that McClain has barely played in 3 years as an NFL journeyman. Has he ever started a game?
I am hoping to see the Coleman, Bishop, and Gardner make this roster.
Crawford did very good as the SDE in the 3-4. those guys are typically the kind of guys who play the 1tech in a 4-3 defense. I just dont see how you can keep crawford off the field if he';s the best DT behind melton.
Me too. I'm surprised Coleman went undrafted. 8.5 sacks from basically the 1 tech position at ASU. From the games I saw he outplayed Sutton. Put up 35 reps and had some pretty decent shuttle and cone times for 285 or so lbs.
No love for Hayden? I know he sucked last year, but the dude was straight worn out, just like Ware. I think he will beat out McClain.
Yeah, Coleman could be a surprise roster-make.
I'll be disappointed if Coleman does not make the roster.
Hayden was terrible.
With the addition of Okoye, the competition is getting a little stiffer, but other than Melton, I don't think anyone else at the DT spot is listed as a "sure thing" to make the roster... McClain would be 2nd I guess.
But yeah, I'd like to see both Coleman and Bishop make the final roster.

IF...DLaw and Selvie could man the weak side and Crawford, Gardner and eventually Spencer could man the strong side I'd like to see Mincey pushed off somehow. I wish we could have found a way to double down on WDE in the draft. Melton, Bishop, McClain, Coleman and Okoye or Bass in the middle with Crawford rotating in there too. A total of 10.
DE: Lawrence, Mincey, Selvie, Gardner, (PUP) Spencer
1T: McClain, Bishop, Coleman
3T: Melton, Crawford, Okoye
That's 10 and no Bass. They won't keep more than 9.
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if Mincey didn't make the cut or was released if/when Spencer comes off PUP... In addition who know what the injury situation could be if/when Spencer comes off of PUP... or for that matter over the course of training camp/preseason who knows what the injury situation will be? But it wouldn't be a surprise to have one of proposed 10 dlinemen end up on IR prior to the start of the season, thus opening up a spot for someone else.
If it comes down to a numbers game for one last spot I hope they go young. That group can't be worse than last years.
What are you basing Crawford being the 2nd best DT on? Other than the fact that hes never actually played the position. He was an athletic edge rushing DE in college and we invested a 3rd round pick in that guy. Let's not be so quick to put a bunch of weight on him and have him clog up the middle. On 3rd and longs or late in the game with a lead? Sure, but we have other guys to play the 1 tech on 1st and 2nd that are bigger and stronger and it won't be wasting Crawford's potential.
I understand the 3-4 DE comparison, but Ryan's use of the end in the 3-4 wasn't as a 2-gap "plugger" in many instances, but playing one-gap.
The need for a DT to play a "1 tech" is probably going to be less than 50% of the snaps, with more emphasis placed on all 4 linemen trying to rush the passer the rest of the time.
But regardless, I think Crawford is going to get a decent amount of snaps along a couple different spots along the defensive line.
