For those projecting Crawford at the 3, I think you should ask yourself, where is he most likely to start.
A. Over Henry Melton
or
B. Over George Selvie
I'm sure he will get looks inside and outside, but the place where he is going to be able to get the most playing time is on the outside. I think you might see Selvie move to the right this year, where he might swing to the right in passing situations.
LDE - Crawford, Gardner
1Tech - McClain, Bass
3Tech - Melton, Okoye
RDE - Selvie, Lawrence
PUP - Spencer
If Spencer comes back, I don't expect him to play LDE.
PS - Bishop, Coleman
Redshirt - Whaley
I don't expect both McClain and Mincey to make this team. I think we have a real youth movement going, I don't think they are that good, and they're significantly more expensive than their counterparts. Mincey especially, who is old, and hasn't been productive in years. You cut Mincey and you save about 750k. McClain not only has a better chance of making the team, he has a better chance of starting. He'll mostly need to fend off Ben Bass who is coming back from injury. I think the lack of buzz around Ben Bass is making people forget that he was playing pretty well before he got hurt. Also, I wouldn't be at all stunned if Bishop or Coleman make the team over McClain.
Overall, I like that we're seeing so much competition, and that we've brought so many guys in early, rather than waiting to see what happens. I was just as wrong as the front office last year expecting Spencer and Ratliff to contribute. That being said, I think we'll have a pretty decent defensive line next year based on what I'm projecting early. Depending on how things shake up, we won't be in such a bad position defensively, and perhaps, who knows, but the draft next year might be more open overall.
