i say keep him this year, then either trade him heading into 2008 draft or before the draft, he is starting to complain too much, he is under contract, i believe for this year and next, so keep him for experience till Spencer and Carpenter get used to postion, then trade him,

if he plays half way decent and can show he is back from surgery, then he would have trade value to someone like the Broncos, they always want our defensive linemen for some strange reason.

you could be looking if ellis comes successfully back from surgery this year, posts like 8 or 9 sacks, you could see us get a 3rd or 4th round draft choice for him in 2008, so i say keep him until then, and if i was jerry Jones, i would tell him to keep his big fat mouth shut, and play.

To everyone saying "cut him," let me ask you this....

Who on our team is a PROVEN pass rusher other than Ware?

Huh.

Yeah, cutting him makes a ton of sense.

We saw how well it worked last year when we entered the season with only two established pass rushers. Entering the season with one this year is bound to work.

I like Ellis but if he does not want to be here then I would let him go. It is better than dealing with a malcontent. He is not going to get more money Jerry would be foolish paying more for a guy who is coming off a major injury and is over 30. As for who can rush the passer Carpenter came on strong at the end of last season and we just drafted a guy known for his pass rushing skills. If I did not like Ellis then I would say to heck with him we will force you to stay on and cut you at our convenience

Couple of things. First off, we have more pass rush ability this year, secondly this year we are playing a pressure defense. Last year we played a read and react two gap defense. Even without Spencer and Ellis, we would have more pressure this season than last.

Doesn't matter.

Right now, it's all talk.

Until something is actually proven, I'll take what I know. We didn't get enough pressure on the QB last year. And now, we want to get rid of one of the guys who actually did apply pressure.

I know Wade has this magic wand and all....

But trading away pressure players when you haven't been able to apply consistant pressure with the players already on the roster, seems a futile practice.

And until Spencer proves he can be a starter (he is a rookie).... and do just as good (if not better) than Ellis, Ellis needs to remain here.

Yeah, I know...."scheme" and all....this year is different, players were handicapped, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. They didn't produce, bottomline.

So....we either "hope" Spencer "gets it" from day one, Carpenter and Burnett make the "next leap" and Spears/Canty are no longer "handicapped by the scheme".......

Or....we hang onto Ellis for safety.

The idea of putting all of our eggs into one basket is appealing, though....

I'd prefer we keep him, but if he was traded I'd love it, and if he was let go I wouldn't whine about it.

As a situational pass rusher its worth it to keep him.

If anyone of us were in his position chances are we/YOU would be complaining about money too... get real..

Didn't he get a new deal like two or three years ago for A LOT of $? I didn't hear him whining bout the signing bonus then. Bottom line he's being a girl about all the LB's that's been drafted over the last 3 years and he can see the writing on the wall. That's what kills me bout these vets...are you supposed to play forever? get over it, play ur tail off so you can get paid by another team next season. It's simple math!

I'd rather just end the relationship. He represents everything that is wrong with our stretch-fading defense, and at this point, it's unlikely that he'll change. He complains about everything from his salary to the way the team plans to use him to who we decide to draft. He's a team "leader", such as it is, and his whiny influence is rubbing off.

I'd rather him be gone - but I understand that might not be reasonable.

Correct. Until a 32 year old player who tore his left Achilles' tendon proves he can return after a single year when it has been known to take two year (which will then make him 33 years old) can still rush the passer.

Point is, Ellis suffered a major injury and is on the back-nine of his career. Yet, he is whinying that he wants more money as if the (guessing here) $30+ million he made throughout his career wasn't enough to be happy with.

He just wants a new contract before he is deemed unable to play. Before he gets to old to sign a big contract. He is speaking out of greed and does not have any loyalty to the team. (not that anyone really does anyhow)

The way I see it. Cast him off, and let him do what he wants. Maybe the Commanders will give him a $50M dollar deal.

It's conditional. If his Achilles has healed and he can rush the passer, keep him. If his Achilles hasn't healed and/or he cannot rush the passer, cut or trade him.

No. Good depth at a cheap price.

Our pass rush was anemic last year. And you want to get rid of one of the players who actually provided pressure?

Sounds like a recipe for success to me

/sarcasm
exactly, he will play and do his best to help the team win or sit on the bench. there is nothing to gain by cutting him, his little complaints will not distract the team, just give us something to argue about.

He sure wont get a big signing bonus from another team by sitting on the bench or holding out, given that he was injured last year and his age... plus that he has never been a dominant player at his position.

I am not relying upon him being the answer.

I am relying upon him being in the mix with everyone else since he has proven to have the ability to rush the passer.

Big difference.

Since we have a bunch of unknowns after Ware, we may as well keep them all since its likely not everyone is going to pan out and since we don't really know what we are working with.

Makes no sense to get rid of someone who can help generate a pass rush when really, we are hoping on several players to provide that; none of which have actually done it.

May as well keep someone around if they've proven they can do it (even though they are coming off a serious injury).

I am not saying rely on him. I am saying keep him to make the odds more favorable of us finding someone else who can rush the passer.

His salary is favorable to us. He has starting experience. And he's versatile.

Let him pout awhile like he did last year. He seems to be one of those sensitive self-whining individuals...

If worring and whining will get him through the summer...good for him.

Now, when he shows up for camp and disruptive during camp...or cannot perform, then put him on the first bus outta town with a "one way ticket."

No one player is bigger than the team...

to my knowledge i dont think as of yet ellis has said he doesnt want to be here or said he wont play hard. Its just an attempt to get more money.

when the season starts he will be competing because his best chance to get another deal is to perform well this year and show he still has something left.

Ellis has been one of the more consistent players we've had in a long time. He always seems to make plays when one is needed. You can't cut veteran leadership like that.

But, Jerry does need to pay him. I can't blame him for wanting a better pay check.

I voted keep him, but only if we could not trade him to some team for a 4th round a better.

We'll never get that.

6th rounder at best.

As last season wore on, so many were saying that the Ellis injury was the mortal blow to the defense.

Now many are thinking "good riddance."

I'm excited about Spencer too, but I'm not ready to bet the house on him.

Trade him before the trade deadline in October.

There are good enough players to replace him who will not be constant sour-pusses like he threatens to be.

Best for the team; best for him.

Keep him and tell him to shut his trap.

He signed the contract. Nobody held a gun to his head.
