Goff is safer than Wentz

I preface this by saying that I would pick Wentz over Goff because of upside and because Romo has a couple of good years left. But in reviewing film, Goff is the more proven commodity. Right now, Wentz is a one-read QB who has not proven he can go through progressions and hit the right man. Watch his film; you rarely, if at all, see his head move from one side to the other before he throws. NFL draft history is littered with QBs who have great physical attributes, but who proved they could not read a defense... Jeff George, Akili Smith, David Carr, RGIII, etc. I'm not saying Wentz can't do it. Im just saying he hasn't yet... On the other hand, Goff can and has. It's his greatest strength. You watch his film and you see his head move 1, 2, 3 times before he lets the ball go. Even when it is clear he is throwing to an outside receiver in a one-read play, he looks off the safety first. These are traits that a QB needs to succeed in the NFL (along with accuracy and a quick release, which Goff also has). Now, Goff does not have Wentz's arm or mobility. Not even close. But I am coming around to the fact that Goff is the safer pick and I'd be happy to have him at 4 (if Ramsey is not there). If Romo went down this year, I am confident Goff could win more games than Wentz. And while he may not have Wentz's upside (Andrew Luck), he has enough upside (Matt Ryan) and less downside. Just my opinion.

Some qb on New England name Brady would agree with you on the physical attributes of a qb. I would love to have either one. I am not a big fan of Ramsey especially if one these two are there when we pick.

I prefer Goff to Wentz, mostly because I think he's got the right mental makeup. Both the smarts and the attitude. That't's what I always worry about with QBs, especially in Dallas where there's such a spotlight. It's a lot of pressure on a 22 year old guy to put him at the head of a billion-dollar franchise. You can see it breaking even the strongest college athletes.

Your in a black alley...On your left...is Goff..On your right is Wentz....Out comes a mob of angry people. Who you think has your back when push comes to shove?

I got a feeling then the bullets start to fly...skinny Goff is hidding under a car...

I think someone trade in front of Dallas to secure Goff.

If I'm in an alley and get jumped, the last thing I think of is throwing footballs at those shooting bullets at me.

If the Cowboys draft a QB, he will be the backup for 2 years. Unless you are banking on Romo suffering a carer-ending type injury during that time. So either player Goff or Wentz definitely should be ready to handle the pressure when that time comes. If not, we obviously didn't draft the right player.

Now Romo probably will miss games during that 2 year period, but he will still be the starter upon his return. In the offseason of 2018 that is where you'll see the team make the "graceful" transition from Romo to Wentz/Goff.

Goff is better than Wentz

And safer than Wentz

And has more upside than Wentz

that's what JJohnson thought about Steve Walsh.......and he had National titles to his name, Goff has 14 total wins over 3 years as a starter---he has more fumbles than wins.

Lol at Wentz being one read. Somebody needs to watch the film again.

I agree. Goff I think is more ready to play today. Mostly because he has played more at this point. But I've watched both a lot and teams have worked with both during this process, and I don't see the one read stuff much. Some routes are designed to be one read, and scouts have raved about Wentz football smarts . He has a good leg up in reading defenses compared to most qb's coming out the last few years. I don't think either should start day one nor do I think most qb's should but Wentz has much more upside and since he won't be starting day one he would be my pick. That said, I suspect he will be gone which says a lot about what nfl scouts think of the two, and they could both be gone in which case I wouldn't touch a QB in this draft

Exactly. Who's more ready to play now should have no bearing whatsoever in Dallas, since the keys to the franchise won't be handed over to (drafted QB) until 2018 at the earliest.

Isn't part of the we need a qb in this draft argument because we need a quality backup for this year since we have a 36 year old injury prone qb, and failed to get one in free agency?

He does..but that's not always enough...

Even when it's combined w the physical attributes

loll.

What is enough then? He checks every box.

He is a more complete player than Goff.

But Goff is somehow better than him?

Goff is way better at all the important things.

Accuracy
Anticipation
Release
Processing information
Pocket presence

If we're drafting Romo's successor based at all on how that player can perform in backup duty during the 2016 season, we're making a terrible mistake. If Romo goes down, you basically write off the season. The difference is the valuable playing experience the drafted QB is getting if thrust into duty, as opposed to guys like Cassell/Weeden who you know have no future here at QB.

While I agree that for a qb drafted long term success is more important than the ability to win now, I still would expect them to be able to be a decent backup. If we see a similar situation to what took place with romo last season I would expect a qb drafted in the top 5 could win me a few of those games. If not is he really worth a top 5 pick?
