I was checking out the hangover food thread and I wrote a novel about my drinking habits, or lack thereof, and I got to thinking...what do I really enjoy most every now and again with a good steak, or any other good savory meal? A beer.

So I got to thinking...what's your favorite beer, and if it's not your favorite, what's a good beer that I really should try sometime? My "go-to" beer is Heineken, but if I could actually find it in the US I would definitely keep some nice cold Warsteiner Dunkel in the fridge. (if you know where to find it in West Georgia, let me know NOW!)

So, what's your favorite non-mainstream beer?

I actually tried Warstieiner for the first time this weekend. It is great!
I like 1554 quite a bit and Boddingtons if I can find it on tap.

I'm pretty much a Bud drinker but I have to admit that I do, on occasion, wish I had a stein of Doppelbock. Brings back memories of losing all memory.

:laugh2:

On a side note, not sure if any of you enjoy Irish Whiskey or not but if you do, one of my very favorites is John Powers Irish Whiskey. They don't sell it everywhere here in the States but you can find it all over Ireland and it's very popular for good reason. Very reasonably priced and quality Whiskey. Not bad if you like Irish Whiskey.

I also love Belhaven Scottish Ale. Here are some others I enjoy:

Smithwicks
Boddingtons
Red Hook ipa
newcastle
shiner kosmos

if you enjoy heineken, may I suggest some Grolsch?

it's pretty similar...a little more skunky in taste. Very good!

I have had Grolsch at a speakeasy bar in Washington DC. Great beer, and yeah it's skunky :)

I've tried a few Irish Whiskeys and haven't been to fawned of them. Then a buddy of mine from Ireland was celebrating an event and he brought out a bottle of 21 year Bushmills and offered me a drink. I told him I preferred scotch. (we had a bottle of Macallen 18 year too) He smiled and handed me a glass and just walked away.

I will say this, I wasn't an Irish Whiskey drinker at the time and I'm still not. The only reason I say I'm still not is the next day I went to the liquor store to get a bottle, but at $100+ a bottle, it's not something I'm going to keep in stock at the house. I will say this though, it was better than the 18 year Macallen. It is definitely on my special occasion list. It is that good.

Most people in the States like Jameson but if you get a chance, see if you can find some John Powers. There is only one place locally I can buy John Powers but I think it generally runs about 28 bucks a bottle. For the price, I don't think you can beat it but I'll leave it to you to decide.

is it branded john powers over there? i'm assuming its the same stuff as powers anyway? as far as cheap irish whiskey goes i like paddy, couple of halfs of that before going to the football goes down a treat during the winter. apparantly they've started selling it your side of the pond.
as a scot i do however feel obligated to point out that whisky is superior to whiskey :D

It is labled John Powers or Powers Gold Label, depending. It's pretty good stuff I think. It's not Crown but it's pretty good. I do like Crown Canadian Whiskey best of all.

My wife won a "St. Patty's Day Drinkers' pack" @ an auction for my son's school and it included a bottle of Jameson Special Reserve Irish Whiskey (along w/ some Guiness Stout & some Irish Creme Liqueur) and that's a smooth drink right there!

Off topic but I dare someone to drink Mephistopheles Stout from the Avery Brewing Company in Boulder.

Been there done that and I really liked it. I picked up some at a store outside Boston a few months ago. I cant find it here in Albuquerque so I guess I'll be ordering some more from Boston. Its not as strong as some of the other beers I buy or brew. Its alot better than Dogfish Head Brewery Olde School but not as good as Mikkeler Black.

Heres one for the truely dedicated beer drinker with very deep pockets....

Sink the Bismark and Tactical nuclear Penguin A few of us are talking about ordering a 2 bottle set directly from brewdog. but keep cringing at the thought of 130ish bucks for 2 12oz bottles.

I tried their "Tokyo" at 19% and not too bad.

Most anything by Brewdog or Mikkeler isnt too bad if you dont mind spending a little more.

not sure how obscure it is (except its only sold in Texas) but i really like
St Arnolds beers.
its a Houston craft brewery with enough different styles to fit everybodys tastes.
they have their regular brews and seasonal brews and a "Divine" series that is just great.
i would recommend one but i actually like them all pretty equally.

If I can order it at Buffalo Wild Wings, it isn't obscure.

Yep.

There was this place in Lubbock years ago that served varied African foods that had around 40 or 50 beers in bottles you could try. There was a wheat beer in an opaque white bottle that was damn good.

I ended up working in a liquor store up there that carried 150+ different varieties.

Bishop's Finger was great. That Sam Adams Triple Bock stuff in the black bottle with the waxed cork stopper was like licking the bottom of your boot.
