Goodell Wants to Get Rid of the Extra Point

"Speaking Monday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league could eventually abolish the extra point.
"The extra point is almost automatic," Goodell said. "I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd. So it's a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play." Goodell said the league is intrigued by a proposal that would automatically grant seven points for every touchdown, but still allow teams to try for an eighth point via a traditional offensive play. The catch is that if you fail to convert, the touchdown then becomes worth only six points. Perhaps the most perfunctory play in sports, extra points serve almost no purpose at the professional level."

What else is this guy going to do to try and change the game?

Next, we should start providing a point scale to TDS. A TD of 80 or more yards is going to be 15 points. FGS of 50 or more will be worth 5.

Just leave the game alone. You want to change the rules and all, that's a little different. But leave the scoring how it's been since the game started. He is starting to wear on me.

I don't like the suggested change either, but it's worth pointing out that the NFL adopted the two-point conversion in 1994, so it's not like it would be an unprecedented thing to change the scoring.

I seriously hate this guy.

Something about it needs to change. It's pointless.

I agree with a few people. 1) if you want to make it more meaningful, push it back 10 yards, or 2) get rid of it and do what Goodell proposes. Like someone said, the 2-point conversion was adopted in 1994. Most of us probably don't even realize that. We assume it's been around forever. We're either too young to remember or we forgot how it used to be because it's been so long. People freak out after every little change. They want to keep football "pure." This is so trivial and it doesn't change the way the game is played. It's not like he's saying you're no longer allowed to run the ball.

I don't know why he has to try and change everything. I know the percentages of missing it are very low but, leave it what it is.

Love that idea. At least we're keeping special teams in the arena. Make it where the place kicker has to kick from the 30 yard line. That would make it a 47 yard FG which isn't necessarily automatic these days. Good post percy!

But the rate of making a 47 yarder is far from a gimme and it deserves more than just one point. You have to make it that it's easy to make but not automatic. A 47 yarder is far from easy. The only way I'd agree with that is if it's a free kick (meaning no defense).

I was thinking maybe a 40-yard attempt, but yeah. That would bring strategy into it in a much bigger way than Goodell's idea would. Much more to second guess, much more to talk about.

This is one of the few good rule change suggestions. The PAT is utterly without drama and a real powerdown. Getting rid of it makes complete sense.

Since we're on the subject, another annoying thing is the kneel down. I believe it's called the victory formation or whatever. If it's mathematically impossible to stop the clock, they should just end the game. For example, yesterday's NFC game. San Fran had 2 timeouts. There was I believe 40 seconds on the clock. Seahawks kneeled, San Fran called time, 37 seconds left---Seahawks kneel, San Fran calls last timeout, 34 seconds left--3rd down, Seahawks kneel, time expires.

I don't know, maybe it's me....but I can manage to deal with the 3 seconds it takes to kick it.

I think the league has managed to overcome the boredom of all these extra point attempts over the years. Maybe it might be best to leave well enough alone and not act like you think you know better.

Speaking of this, I think there's been one failed victory formation in history. There are 5 failed extra points a year. And if the reason is to preserve safety, it's valid since there are occasional injuries in victory formations and extra points.
