Goodell Wants to Get Rid of the Extra Point

I was thinking maybe a 40-yard attempt, but yeah. That would bring strategy into it in a much bigger way than Goodell's idea would. Much more to second guess, much more to talk about.

Keeping the two-point conversion at the 2-yard line, I take it. I'd probably argue to have the extra point moved back to the 15 or 20.

Absolutely keep the 2-point conversion right where it is.

If the ball goes back to the 20 for the PAT, that's a 37-yard kick. Not automatic. And then all the strategic scenarios that come into play for FG when you've got a lousy kicker, an injured kicker or snapper, or bad weather...all those would figure into every extra point.

Find the spot that makes the average coach start thinking, "Should we go for two?"

I like the suggestions that some have already posted...make it maybe a 35 yard field goal.

Why not make it relate to the position of the TD? If you score a TD up the middle, kick from the middle. If the TD is over the pylon, then the extra point is taken from the hash mark.

It's like that in rugby.

I'd be all for getting rid of the PAT and make you either have to go for two, or just have the PAT be a regular play instead of a kick. With that, as the game continues to move away from kicking the ball, at what point does the sport have to change its name?

Give the defense more incentive. If they block the PAT kick let them run it back for points. Same with the 2 pt PAT. If they cause a fumble or INT let them run it back for points.

The only idea I like would be to move it up to the 1. Teams would likely choose to go for it more often and the times they kick the pat would be at the end of the game if only 1 pt is needed.

How about this idea: it's 3 fold.

1) eliminate extra point and make it all 2 point conversions

2) give one point on kickoff if it goes through the uprights

3) in return for offering a point, make touchbacks start at the 30 not the 20. It would help player safety by not making teams go 80 yards. I'm sure studies could be done to figure out how many plays would be saved by shortening drives 10 yards.

I actually wouldn't hate it. But I agree with Percy, instead of killing it, make it more difficult. Force the kicker to kick it backwards over his head or something. :)

I'd actually LOVE a mandatory 2 pt conversion.

52 yards.

That's overkill IMO. At that point, you might as well go for 2 every time. I think something like a 35 or 40 yard extra point would be more appropriate in that it's definitely doable for a kicker, but not automatic.

I like that idea too!
Mandatory two point conversions.

That would add some spice to the game that the extra point couldn't do.

Move the 2 points to the 7

Love that idea. At least we're keeping special teams in the arena. Make it where the place kicker has to kick from the 30 yard line. That would make it a 47 yard FG which isn't necessarily automatic these days. Good post percy!

It's worth one point for a reason. 47yd kick to gain one point would be silly. Want to move it back to the 10? That's fine. To the 30 is way too far.

And adding the 2pt conversion was no big deal. It was already in the college game. They just brought it to the NFL. That just gives you the option. This is forcing the PAT out of the game and making some goofy thing where a TD is now worth 7. That is not trivial. That's just stupid.
