Goodell Wants to Get Rid of the Extra Point

Since we're on the subject, another annoying thing is the kneel down. I believe it's called the victory formation or whatever. If it's mathematically impossible to stop the clock, they should just end the game. For example, yesterday's NFC game. San Fran had 2 timeouts. There was I believe 40 seconds on the clock. Seahawks kneeled, San Fran called time, 37 seconds left---Seahawks kneel, San Fran calls last timeout, 34 seconds left--3rd down, Seahawks kneel, time expires.

Technically, the kneeling-down team might fumble the snap.

I don't think that part needs to change.

Terrible idea. He wants excitement but his new rules have all but taken the Kickoff Return out the game, which is one of the more exciting plays in the game. It's like Congress, if they aren't creating new rules every year they feel like they aren't doing anything and that leads to dumb new rules.

I'd be okay with the kickoff things if teams had to go for 2, I think that's pretty exciting.

What about having the extra point essentially be a 2 point conversion that is worth 1 point? Keep it at the 2 yard line, but it makes it much more interesting. There would be no option to kick.

Lets see....he is the son of a Senator and has zero football playing experience past High School and now he is head of the NFL. Naw, nothing bad can come from this

Goodell is an utter tool who throws around ideas to change the game that does not need changing, rules wise. He has already taken away kickoff returns for the most part and turned QB's into China dolls.

There is only four options here:
1. leave it alone
2. make the EP from the 25(42yds)
3. make teams go for two every time
4. just get rid of all kickers, shorten the field and lets just get to Arena Football sooner than later

If Jerry has the pull he thinks he does, he will use Bailey to his advantage. Teams can now have the opportunity to kick a 50yd FG for 6 points. I like it, get er done Jerry! But first, make sure 18 teams make the playoffs, we need a chance.

lmao

"We are all about safety so we are going to do away with kickoffs if at all possible. But, then we are going to add two games to the schedule and take away the safest play in the game, the PAT."

What an absolut clown.

  • I think this was something Belicheck suggested but the flair for drama sounds like Jerry has been in his ear. Regardless it will add some spice to the game.

My thing about the extra point is even if it was not as easy as it is now, what exactly is the point of it? Field goals really are barely football plays as it is. It always bothered me that for 59 minutes football is a battle of brutal physicality, speed, grace and toughness... almost literally a virtual war of field position played by men who pay a terrible physical price... and then, a guy with a clean jersey comes out and decides the game in a play that has nothing to do with any of that.

Let's see Belichick says it two weeks ago and now Goodell is for it.

Need any more proof Roger is owned by Craft and Mara?

Without kickers how do you have the strategy of field position?

You mean punters? You don't need punting to play a game of field position though I don't have a problem with giving teams an option of trading a down for a chance to gain field position. Punters aren't kickers though, and they don't score actual points.

If the spirit of football was remade for the 21 century and didn't have to worry about upsetting a bunch of tradition, there wouldn't be any kicking in it. It's not part of what makes the game what it is, and it can live just fine without it.

Love that idea. At least we're keeping special teams in the arena. Make it where the place kicker has to kick from the 30 yard line. That would make it a 47 yard FG which isn't necessarily automatic these days. Good post percy!

I think most teams would go for two if that were the case.

Kickers do factor in. If it's 4th and 6 from the 30, that's where you weigh 3 pts vs giving the ball at the 30 or 37.

I want to see the PAT go away and replaced with kickoff options I mentioned above. With Bailey we'd have a great shot at 9 pts per possession under my plan. The fact 8 of our games at minimum are in a dome every year would be huge as well.

Teams like the Giants, jets and packers would be at a huge disadvantage

I'm fairly sure that football can survive without that bit of strategy. Or better yet, instead of field goals, why not just have Tony Romo throw the football from the same spot through a moving tire that is installed in every stadium. Sound stupid? That's because it is! But it also has just as much to do with the actual game being played for 59 minutes as a football non-combatant coming in and kicking the ball through the uprights. They're both just feats of skill unrelated to football that were installed into the game for God knows what reason. Probably because the game was a lot different.

Anyways, not really arguing against field goals going away because I really don't want to even see that. But virtually automatic extra points are a waste of everyone's time.

Kickers are too damn good these days. Just about every kicker is automatic inside of 40...is it going to hit at 100% rate like it is right now? No. But it won't be as hard as you guys supposedly think it will be. So the idea of moving it back even 20 yards isn't a good one

If Goodell wants to improve the game, reduce the number of commercials. I understand the networks need to get their money, but there is waaaaaaaaaay to many commercials. It shouldn't take 3 1/2 hours to play a 60 minute game.
