I find it amazing that he gave up doing the one thing he was actually good at. Probably because it required too much, you know, actual research.

How did he research?

He just made phone calls to his contacts a couple of days before the draft.

From AdamJT13:

When a player is drafted, he automatically is tendered a one-year contract for the rookie minimum base salary (for 2012, that is $390,000). This amount immediately is applied to the team's rookie pool and salary cap.

Because most teams have at least 51 players with cap numbers higher than the rookie minimum salary before the draft, the automatic tenders for drafted players won't affect those teams' caps at all.

It sometimes is mistakenly reported that teams must have cap room in order to use their draft choices, but that applies only to teams that have fewer than 51 players signed or tendered at the time of the draft.

You also have to add the players signing bonus money against the cap.

Signing bonus money is included in the cap figures already. The cap number used for the rule of 51 determined by adding salary plus prorated signing bonus. Same would be true when rookies sign their new contract, not when they are drafted.

Mass media is the one career you can work in that, other than meteorology, requires you to be wrong as much as you want and later attribute it to factors that were not foreseeable or outside of your control.

He didn't volunteer for the change. DMN couldn't afford to keep paying a guy that only covered the draft or the draft and some non-Cowboys NFL news.

Not to draft them. Signing bonuses wouldn't be counted until the contracts are signed. (after june 2)

He is respected in one area and one area only.

His mock drafts right before the draft.

Because he has plenty of contacts with teams and seems to be able to get info needed to get a good idea of what players are going to a team.

That is about the only good thing he does.

It is shocking sometimes the stuff that comes out of his mouth in other areas.

There are some media members out there that do things just for reaction like Galloway and Doocy (sp?). With Goose I think he is dead serious and believes some of the silly things he says.

But many do pay attention to his last couple of mock drafts because he has proven over the years to be one of the better or even best at it.
